In addition, as the second semester begins, so too will my role as co-president of Graduate Women in Business (GWIB). GWIB is a national organization, and being able to lead the McCombs chapter will be a tremendous experience. There are numerous opportunities in B-school to serve as an officer in a student organization (GWIB, Graduate Marketing Network, Graduate Real Estate Society, Entrepreneur Society, Finance Club, Graduate Business Council, etc.), and the experience gained is beneficial, both personally and professionally.

A PLACE FOR ME.  My journals all seem to begin with my own experience and end, somehow, with my advice for prospective students. In addition to extracurricular involvement I would like to stress the importance of doing informational interviews when you are in school (and even before you begin school!). These are not traditional interviews because you are not looking for a job from that person. Rather, you are looking for information and advice about that person's particular job or career.

The four- to five-week break between first and second semester is an ideal time to schedule these informational interviews. During this past break I met with four recent McCombs graduates currently working in real estate in Dallas. I also met with several well-established real estate professionals to get their input and advice on the industry. I now feel much more knowledgeable and better-positioned to begin my real estate studies and find that perfect internship. I hope to have an update on my internship offer (offers?!) in my next journal!
