The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman Of course I chose this book. It is an excellent analysis of the many forces operating in the world today that are fundamentally changing the way in which we understand and conduct business. It cuts across many disciplines, is written in an apolitical way (so that politics don't get in the way), and is very provocative.
State of Fear by Michael CrichtonThis book, in novel form, takes a critical look at the data in support of and not in support of global warming. More important, it addresses the media hysteria (or lack thereof) that can have so much influence on public opinion and policy. In the way that only Crichton can, he presents a side of the data and the debate (and many many references at the end of the book for those who want to do their own digging) that we just do not see in the media.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini Only because it gave me a feel for pre-revolution Afghanistan that I never would have know about (or cared about) before reading the book. It is extraordinarily well-written and also extraordinarily improbable as a best-seller.
Blink and The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell He writes such interesting books about day-to-day phenomena that are all but invisible. Blink suggests that what appears to be intuition is not really, but is the ability to key in on a very few critical indicators and thereby make decisions that appear to be intuitive. The Tipping Point helps us understand how data accumulate in unexpected ways to create big effects.
