The University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business recently announced that its new dean is Dennis Howard, who previously headed the school’s marketing department. What’s really interesting about this appointment is that Howard is also a leading authority on sports and finance and not many business school deans have that on their resume.
The author of three books and over 100 articles in sports and business management and marketing publications, Howard also once served as the academic coordinator for the James H. Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. Before coming to the University of Oregon in 1997, Howard helmed the graduate program in sports management at the University of Ohio, according to press release.
His relationship with the University of Oregon goes way back. This is actually the third time he's worked at UO, according to the press release. "I have a 45-year relationship with the University of Oregon. Most of the important things in my life are connected to the UO," said Howard, according to the press release. "I met my wife here, made cherished friendships, received a phenomenal education and launched my professional career. Most of what I have accomplished I owe in large part to the University of Oregon."
The faculty, says Howard, is the school's strongest asset. Like other deans, he will be facing a changing economy and the challenge of providing a great education to future MBAs. What do you think about the challenges for today's business school deans? Let us know in the comments below.
