The University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business has tapped Thomas W. Gilligan as the new dean. Gilligan will replace George W. Gan, who has been at the school for nearly six years.
Gilligan, who will start his new role on Sept. 1, served as interim dean of the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business from February of 2006 to April of 2007, according to a university-issued press release. He has held positions at the University of Southern California as a vice-dean for undergraduate and doctoral education and was a visiting professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
Before entering academia, he served for four years as a Russian linguist in the United States Air Force. He also was a staff economist in the early 80s on President Ronald Reagan’s Council of Economic Advisors.
He was selected following a nationwide search by an 18-member committee, according to the school.
