SURVEY DETAILS
| |
Indiana continued its downward slide in 1998, dropping six spots to No. 21 -- this after an eight-place fall in '96. Much of the school's '98 decline can be attributed to vastly lower satisfaction scores on BW's graduate survey. For the second straight time, Indiana earned the dubious distinction of gaining the worst marks for teaching in electives of any Top 25 school. But profs did get props for being more responsive to student concerns and making themselves more accessible outside of the classroom. Another grad gripe: the placement office -- ranked fifth-worst in the Top 25. Students found the career center's services lackluster and disorganized, impeding job networking.
Indiana also lost major ground in the recruiting survey, dropping seven spots to 20th in 1998. Even so, companies praised grads' accounting and finance abilities, rating them fifth and eighth-best, respectively, in the Top 25. The upshot: The school's 214 recruiters awarded grads an average pay package worth $116,921. Meanwhile, 22% of the polled graduating class received stock options, and another 22% negotiated paid-for housing as part of their compensation -- the second-highest percentage among all 61 schools that BW evaluated (topped only by Clark Atlanta). Considering Indiana's $17,013 tuition -- cheap by B-school standards -- the school is quite a bargain. But foreigners may feel unwelcome: Just 19% of the school's full-time student body are internationals -- lowest in the Top 25.

STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
Indiana is aggressively recruiting women and international applicants, because it finds itself lagging somewhat on the diversity front: In 1998, female enrollment was 28 percent, and non-U.S. students made up only 19 percent of the student body -- the lowest proportion in the Top 25. (The school has done a better job of attracting minority students, with African Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans making up 11 percent of the population.) Admissions officers are traveling farther afield these days in hopes of building applicant pools in Europe and South America, as well as continuing the growth already experienced in Asia. Prospective female candidates are now sent a four-color brochure called "Women in Business," which profiles successful women alums and current students and discusses life in Bloomington from a feminine viewpoint.
Overall, the ratings drop appears to have put something of a damper on applications: For the class of 2000, the number fell more than 8 percent from the previous year. At the same time, however, Indiana is enrolling more of those it admits, with the school's yield more than doubling between 1996, when only 20 percent of those admitted actually matriculated, and 1998, when 44 percent did.
The Kelley School says it looks for students whose academic backgrounds, work experience, leadership abilities, and communication skills meet the demands of the program and promise a successful managerial career. Academic record, GMAT scores, work experience, record of leadership, letters of recommendation, and essays all factor into whether you'll be admitted. Early application is encouraged; domestic applicants who meet the December deadline should have a decision by early February, while those who wait until the final deadline March 1 won't hear until late April. International applicants must apply by February 1 to be considered.
Interviews are not required but are strongly encouraged as a way to demonstrate your interest in earning an Indiana MBA. A little less than half of admitted applicants were interviewed in 1998. Every weekday throughout the academic year, visitors may arrange for an interview, a class visit, an information session facilitated by MBA staff and students, and a B-school tour. You'll also have lunch with a current student. To arrange your trip to campus, call the admissions office.
