SURVEY DETAILS
| |
The Fuqua School of Business catapulted four spots to No. 7 in the 1998 survey. One reason: the school's concerted effort to develop closer ties with key companies (in the process, upping the amount of on-campus recruiters for second-years from 220 in 1996 to 260 in '98). That led to a three-place rise in the recruiter satisfaction poll, helped prompt companies to rank Fuqua's placement office second only to UCLA's, and earned Fuqua the distinction of being rated the fourth-most-improved MBA program in the Top 25. Students certainly weren't complaining: 96.2% of the polled Class of '98 had a job at graduation (seventh-highest overall), garnering an average of 3.2 job offers apiece.
Age may be one factor behind recruiters' renewed fondness for the school -- Fuqua students averaged 29.2 years at graduation, making them the oldest and most seasoned in the Top 25. Another reason for recruiter enthusiasm may just be grads' plain smarts: Companies ranked them in the top 10 for having among the best abilities in global business, general management, finance, and technology. Despite the praise, however, Fuqua grads received the sixth-lowest average total comp package in the top 25 --$115,568. But 19.1% of the grads polled received paid-for housing or rent as a job perk -- the third most in the Top 25 grouping (behind only Indiana and Michigan). And 11.5% of the class had their tuition covered by their employer. That tuition reimbursement is no small potatoes when considering that the average Fuqua student graduated $40,400 in debt.

STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
Fuqua's admissions office says it's looking for applicants with "innovation, vitality, and drive," who show a "spirit that is dynamic, team-oriented, and intellectually challenging." That means your grades and GMAT scores will be looked at closely, and you'll be well advised to display both leadership and team-player qualities through your professional and extracurricular activities. While the competition to get into Fuqua isn't what you'll find at Wharton or Stanford, it's getting stiffer all the time: The number of applications for the class of 2000 came in at a record 3,399, 11 percent higher than applications for the class of `99.
Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to interview with admissions officers on campus; about half of the applicants for the class of 2000 did so. If you want an on-campus interview, you are urged to do so as early as possible in the admissions cycle; those who apply early have a better chance both of getting in and of getting scholarship money. The Fuqua application can be downloaded from the school Web site, but must be submitted by mail.
