SURVEY DETAILS
Yale's School of Management jumped two places from No. 22 to No. 20 in BW's 1998 survey. The school's rise is due to higher marks on both the corporate and student surveys. In the grad poll, Yale moved up 11 spots to No. 11 as students hailed the faculty's accessibility, the emphasis on teamwork, the caliber of their classmates, and network connections. But they were displeased with SOM's lackluster information technology infrastructure, scoring it worst in the Top 25.

Recruiters, for their part, elevated Yale three places in the corporate poll. That's the result of Yale SOM making a bigger effort to cater to companies' needs. In September, 1998, the school even changed its degree name -- from a Master's in Public & Private Management (MPPM) to the traditional MBA -- to make it more recognizable to recruiters worldwide. The school has significantly increased the number of companies that recruit its grads on campus from just 76 in 1997 to 113 in '98. And when all is said and done, Yale SOM's Class of '98 earned pay packages averaging $123,008. Meanwhile, 45% of the surveyed class received a yearend bonus, too. But perhaps most impressive is the 98% increase in base salary the typical Yale grads made over their preenrollment levels (from $40,877 to $80,800).

STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
As you might have guessed from both the high quality of Yale students and the B-school's historic mission and new direction, admissions criteria are threefold. Applicants should demonstrate "capacity and motivation for academic achievement and intellectual performance"; "motivation and ability to cope with the practical problems of organizations, to influence the outcome of events and to work effectively with others"; and "commitment to effective management as a socially useful activity." The emphasis is on both the academic and experiential aspects of a candidate's background; you are expected to submit letters of recommendation from both school- and work-related references. Students here tend to be older and more experienced than most schools, but that experience doesn't have to come from the business world -- Yale is one place you'll have a decent shot even if you've only worked in government or nonprofits.

Yale groups applicants into three separate rounds. The first are those whose paperwork is in by November; a second round comes in January and a third in March. You can expect a reply roughly two months after you apply. Interviews are not required -- in fact, only 37 percent of the class of 2000 was interviewed -- but can be requested, either on campus or in a dozen cities around the world visited by admissions. Campus visits can be arranged by calling the admissions office; group information sessions are held on Mondays and Thursdays at 11:30 a.m., and can be followed up with student meetings, campus tours, and class attendance. Applications can be downloaded from the school Web site and then mailed in after completion (no electronic submissions are available yet), or a paper copy can be requested from the admissions office.
