SURVEY DETAILS
Washington University's Olin School slipped a spot from No. 16 to No. 17 in 1998. On the academic front, grads were pleased by both the school's new grading system and its reworked curriculum. They also enjoyed Olin's intimate environment, which was fostered by an extremely accessible faculty outside of the classroom -- ranked fourth-most approachable in the Top 25.

The placement scene was a different story, however. Despite averaging 3.4 job offers apiece, almost 15% of Wash U's grads were unemployed at cap 'n' gown time -- the highest amount in the Top 25. Meanwhile, of the 61 B-schools BW evaluated, Olin students ranked their school 25th overall for its network connections. In addition, Olin was at the bottom of the elite B-school grouping for its number and quality of recruiting firms. The school's 160 second-years had just 95 firms on campus to choose from. At the end of their two years, grads pulled down average pay packages equaling $97,245 -- the second lowest in the Top 25. However, they did increase their base salaries by an average of 97% over their pre-enrollment levels.

STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
Like other top schools, Olin looks at objective measures such as GPA and GMAT scores, but also examines your work history, goals, motivation, achievements, and character, not to mention how well you are able to communicate these traits in your application essays and interview. A personal interview is not required, but is strongly encouraged; some 80 percent of admitted applicants in the class of 2000 were interviewed by admissions officers in St. Louis or at MBA Forums around the country. International applicants may interview by telephone. Those who come to campus will be able to attend first-year classes, tour Simon Hall, and lunch with a student host. The school runs a preview weekend at the beginning of February in which Olin programs are discussed in depth.

Olin has five admissions rounds, one a month from December through April; you can expect a reply five to six weeks later. You would do well to apply early, however, as the school has become more selective in recent years -- while nearly half of all applicants were accepted in 1996, just one-third got the nod in 1998. You can apply the old-fashioned way, by requesting a paper application or downloading the form from the school's Web site and mailing it back in, or you can fill it out via computer and submit it electronically.
