SURVEY DETAILS
| |
The University of North Carolina's business school remained in the 19th spot in the 1998 survey. But that doesn't mean Kenan-Flagler has been idle. Quite the opposite: The school recently appointed a new dean -- who will be angling to boost the use of technology in the classroom -- and moved into its new, state-of-the-art McColl building. Academically, the school is also working on developing niches in environment and economic development. And the faculty was given high marks for its accessibility outside of the classroom and for its responsiveness to student concerns.
Cap 'n' gown time proved lucrative for most KFBS grads. On average, they pulled down a $116,927 total pay package, landing them in the middle of the Top 25. They also earned an average base salary nearly 72% higher than their preenrollment levels, and 38% of the Class of 1998 got a yearend bonus, with 17% getting stock options. On the downside, about 5% of the class received no job offers, exiting B-school with nothing in hand but a diploma. That's the third-highest percentage in the elite Top 25 B-school group. But the degree itself can be quite a bargain -- tuition and fees for nonresidents are just $16,100, fourth-lowest in the Top 25. Another point to keep in mind: Foreigners make up just 21% of Kenan-Flagler's 470-person student body -- second-lowest, ahead of only Virginia's Darden School.

STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
Among the qualities Kenan-Flagler lists as desirable in an MBA candidate are "analytical and organizational abilities, leadership instincts, interpersonal and communication skills, and personal motivation." Since you can emphasize many of these in a personal interview, it's a good idea to schedule one as early as possible -- either in Chapel Hill, or at an MBA Forum in Los Angeles, Chicago, or San Francisco. (The school strongly encourages, but does not require a face-to-face talk; some 79 percent of applicants accepted in 1998 were interviewed.) If you do come to campus, the admissions office will arrange for you to attend a class, tour the McColl Building, and have lunch with a current student.
While some extra room opened up for the classes of 2000 and 2001 due to the enrollment increase, you can probably expect higher selectivity once that population bump-up has become the norm. All the more reason to get your application in by the October, November, or January deadlines, instead of waiting until March -- especially for North Carolina residents, who face stiffer competition for those ultra-low in-state tuition rates. You can expect a reply within seven to eight weeks of the deadline you meet. While most B-schools these days look for applicants with work experience, Kenan-Flagler requires an absolute minimum of two years on the job -- so if you're fresh from undergraduate school, don't bother to apply.
