SURVEY DETAILS
UC Berkeley's Haas School fell three spots to 16th on BW's 1998 survey. The drop is due largely to student dissatisfaction with the number (114) and quality of companies that recruited the school's 240 second-years on campus. Another grad gripe: They received the lowest average number of job offers in the Top 25 at just 2.46 apiece. Moreover, more than 5% of the class was unemployed at graduation -- that's the second-highest percentage in the Top 25. Put simply, recruiters and students agree that the school's placement office needs help. It ranked dead last among the Top 25. Still Haas grads did all right for themselves, nabbing an average total comp package worth $133,235 -- 10th-highest overall. That's partly the result of the school's proximity to mighty Silicon Valley. Another sure sign of the Valley's influence on the Haas placement situation: 27% of the graduating class received stock options as part of their compensation packages -- second-highest in the group.

On the academic side of things, Haas fared much better. Students praised the school's cooperative culture, which is among the most diverse in the elite B-school group. Haas is tied for first (with NYU) for having the highest female enrollment, at 38%, and is tied for second for having the highest underrepresented minority presence, at 14% (tied with Michigan). Another school perk: It has the most intimate elective classes. On average, just 24 students were enrolled in one of Haas's 88 elective courses. New dean, Laura Tyson, the only woman to hold the top post in the Top 25, faces some challenges.

STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
Haas says that in considering potential students, the school is seeking a "high level of intellectual performance; substantial professional experience demonstrating potential for a career in management; personal qualities and attributes suggesting leadership, maturity, ethical character, social and civic responsibility, and goal orientation." Applicants are advised that while the school has no minimum GPA requirement, a 3.0 average is the "standard for serious consideration." Students are expected to demonstrate computer proficiency before arriving on campus, and are asked to submit two letters of recommendation, preferably from your current employer --academic recommendations are definitely frowned upon.

Applications can by filled out on paper, on disk supplied by the admissions office, in a computer file downloaded from the school Web site, or entirely on line. Completed applications can either be mailed in or submitted electronically, depending on the format you choose. While evaluative interviews are not required, they are strongly encouraged, and could give you an edge on the not-so-insignificant competition to get into Haas: In 1998, 58 percent of admitted applicants were interviewed by admissions staff or by alumni in selected East Coast cities, compared with 39 percent of applicants interviewed overall. Interviews can be arranged from mid-September through mid-December and late January through the end of March by calling the admissions office. The school also offers drop-in information sessions run by second-year students Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. from September through mid-May; staff will coordinate class visits and lunch with current students if you so desire (be advised that no classes are held on Mondays, however). If you can't make it to campus, you can take an interactive, virtual tour by plugging into the school Web site.
