1999 Profile Update School Profile School Statistics Graduates' Comments: Krannert provides an excellent focus on analytical skills in all aspects of its course work. The administration truly listened and responded to student concerns. Placement services were truly exceptional -- interviews and second-round visits were so numerous that I could not schedule them all. Operations programs were strong, but I was particularly impressed with finance and strategy programs. Lastly, you cannot beat the program for the price. --Senior Consultant Most students have assistantships that cover tuition and provide a stipend for food and entertainment. Although Krannert is known for its operations concentration, the finance concentration is as good if not better. Krannert has a strong corporate finance focus and has recently developed a strong financial investments elective. With the addition of a student-managed investment fund and an advanced portfolio management elective, in addition to the traditional portfolio management and security analysis electives, Krannert will soon be seeing more of its graduates on Wall Street. --Senior Marketing Planner Purdue's program is a great deal for the money -- a truly positive NPV. The student that is aggressive about finding assistance can easily get free tuition, and a stipend. Combine this with the small class sizes, and personal attention from faculty and you have a real winner in my opinion. I got a great education, a great job, and never went into debt. I feel that the educational strength of Purdue is corporate finance, operations, and the high level of computer skills. I also enjoyed the fact that Purdue requires every student to take a communication skills class that runs through the entire first year. The workload was tough during the first year, but it paid off at my internship. The second year eases up and focuses on electives. --Consulting Purdue's MBA has completely changed my life. I tripled my former salary and changed career paths from Industrial Engineering to Investment Banking. I will go back to my home country, Peru, with a salary as good as my American classmates'. On top of this, I am graduating with a debt of just $5,000. It is amazing the number of part-time assistantships available at Purdue, that pay you enough for your living expenses and give you tuition remission. Almost everyone who searched for an assistantship got one. --Finance The school improved dramatically my second year, when we got a new dean. We have had some outstanding visiting professors, and I feel very lucky to have been able to learn from them. However, a visiting professor almost ruined the whole experience -- he was awful. There needs to be a better review for these visiting professors. --Product Marketing Associate Professor Kim is outstanding. He is a new professor who taught a new class called, "Managerial Applications of Spreadsheet Modeling." While it is an elective, I would recommend everyone take it. The material covered and his teaching style are sure to gain him much deserved popularity and respect. --Financial Analyst I have had the opportunity to work with students from other top-ranked schools. I would rate myself and my classmates in a league with the perennial powerhouses. It is very obvious that Krannert turns out hardworking, intelligent students who are down to earth. While the Operations curriculum seems to get all of the attention, the Finance Dept. deserves some credit. All of the finance faculty are among the best professors that I have ever had. The small size of Krannert is also a bonus. There is a real sense of teamwork and friendship among the students and faculty. It is hard to get lost in a crowd of 300. The only problem is that there are not enough students to meet the demand of the companies that come to recruit on campus. --Operations The Operations and Manufacturing & Technology Management options at Purdue are exceptional. The quality of these courses coupled with top-notch classmates (work experience and education) pushed me to perform and learn at the highest level. Additionally, the quality of the Management Placement office (MPO) cannot be overstated. --Operations The administration needs to focus less on the heavy core curriculum and more on elective opportunities. The student workload is heavy, but the required course preparation provides ample returns in the eyes of corporate recruiters. The faculty has become visibly more responsive to student concerns during my enrollment in the program. --Consulting Krannert is focused on quality, not quantity. With less than 200 students per year, the school can really tailor to the needs of the student -- whether in the classroom or during the interview process during the career search. I have been very impressed with Krannert's efforts to continually upgrade the technologies the students use (and will continue to use in the workplace). The workload is heavy and unforgiving, but it prepares each of us for success in the workplace. --Profit Analyst After Krannert fell out of the 1996 BW survey, I was very impressed with the response from the students, faculty, and administration. They immediately formed a permanent steering committee that has already accomplished a great deal. They have added a full-time program director (in addition to the faculty adviser), they now publish faculty evaluations, and they have initiated a curriculum benchmarking program. This program has already made changes to marketing and OBHR curriculum and has added such things as an annual marketing case competition. Operations is not the only strength of Krannert. Finance, Marketing, and Economics faculty and classes were top-notch. The placement office (MPO) was truly outstanding. Their relationships with top-name global, national, and regional companies led to a ton of interviews for me, even despite the fact that I was in a smaller function area. Opportunities for service work, consulting projects with local companies, and student-run clubs were plentiful. I worked with a local newspaper publisher on a marketing project that helped me get my internship. --Marketing The placement office at Krannert continues to provide students with outstanding resources. The Management Placement Office (MPO) has developed a top-notch Web site that enables students and employers to more quickly find information and resources. As has been the case in the past, the cities of West Lafayette and Lafayette continue to be detrimental for the Master's program. However, the metro area is growing, and opportunities for cultural excursions lie in nearby Indianapolis (1 hour drive) and Chicago (2.5 hour drive). In my professional interactions with students from other top MBA programs, I feel that Purdue is on the right track. For example, Krannert has installed a full version of SAP R/3 for student use in the computer lab. MIS, Operations, and other instructors are incorporating this technology into their classes. Krannert definitely competes with the nation's top 20 MBA programs. --Consulting Krannert has emphasized management skills from operations to finance not for Wall Street but for manufacturers. Recently, the school has increased the number of international students, which has given diversification to the class. I believe that the school should expand the class size and increase the number of electives. --Consulting Purdue University offers a great value for the quality of education provided. The university offers many opportunities for assistantships (teaching, research, or administrative)to further subsidize tuition. --Marketing Back to Top 1999 Profile Update School Profile School Statistics |
