STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
Cox has pushed hard over the last couple of years to increase student quality, which means it's now much harder to get into this school than it once was: While the B-school accepted 62 percent of applicants to the Class of 1998, just 32 percent of those who applied to the Class of 2000 were admitted. Over that same two-year period, the average GMAT increased from 601 to 636; the average GPA rose from 3.0 to 3.2; and the number of entering students with less than a year's work experience plunged from 13 percent to less than 3 percent. Meanwhile, the number of applications the school received jumped from 491 in 1997 to 595 in 1998, an increase of more than 20 percent.
One way you can distinguish yourself from the growing pack is through a personal interview, not required but strongly encouraged (about 60 percent of those admitted in 1998 interviewed on campus or at one of several MBA Forums the school attends around the U.S.). The admissions office says selection criteria focus not only on academic record, but on "distinctive achievements, commitments, and motivation for a graduate business education." Among the qualities the school seeks in candidates: "leadership ability, international experience, initiative, management potential, communication skills, international experience, and interpersonal skills," plus "an entrepreneurial spirit." So you should look to play up those aspects of your background in your interview and essays. Those who apply by November 30 will receive a response by January 30; if you wait until the April 15 deadline, you won't hear until May 30.
