STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
Despite the opposite trend at most B-schools across the country, Rice has seen a falloff in applicants during much of the `90s, from 755 in 1992 to 511 in 1998. That means that while the school accepted 32 percent of applicants to the Class of 1994, it admitted 48 percent to the Class of 2000 -- which means you have an excellent opportunity to get into an up and coming program.

How do you get an edge? Your GMAT and GPA matter, of course, but Rice also takes into account your choice of major, electives, course load, and grade patterns in evaluating your academic background. Leadership potential ranks high on the list of criteria for admission, so you should stress your experiences leading others and utilizing management skills on the job and in extracurricular and community activities, both in the three application essays and an interview -- which the school strongly encourages all applicants to arrange. About 9 percent of the Class of 2000 had less than a year's work experience, but five years was the average time on the job. You're also encouraged to apply early -- those who apply by the December or January deadlines can expect a response in six weeks; if you wait until March or April to apply, you won't hear for two months.
