STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS

Smeal has become quite a bit more selective in the past few years. In 1992, the school admitted 44 percent of applicants; in 1998, that was down to 25 percent. Over the same period, the number of applications has risen nearly 50 percent. While 9 percent of the class of 2000 was still admitted with less than a year's work experience, Smeal recommends that you have at least two years on the job before applying; you should also be computer literate, mathematically competent, and have a working knowledge of statistics, basic economics, and basic accounting. Because the school is on a rolling admissions system and the class size is small, it's advisable to get your paperwork in before the April 1 deadline if possible; those seeking scholarships and fellowships should aim for February 15, and international applicants must submit completed materials by March 1.

Grades are based on a 4.0 scale: A=4.0, A-=3.67, B+=3.33, B=3.0, B-=2.67, C+=2.33, C=2.0, D=1.0, and F=0. For graduation, a B or 3.0 average is required.

Most alumni career services are handled through the Penn State Alumni Association. Services include: a 24-hour job hotline (Lion JobLine), access to the career information center at the University Park campus, and an Internet job listing service (JobTrak). In addition, Smeal College provides the Smeal Career Advisers Network (SCAN), a networking database for alumni and students.
