STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
One of Dean Carolyn Woo's major priorities is improving the quality of students entering the Notre Dame MBA program, even as she boosts its size. As a result, work experience is becoming more important at the college -- students entering in 1998 average about 4 years of work experience up from 3 years for those entering in 1996. The admissions office likes to see at least two years of professional experience, but will occasionally admit students without any experience if they are exceptional individuals.
Of course, your GPA and GMAT will play a major role in the admissions process, but the essays, recommendations and a personal interview are the places where you can differentiate yourself. Showing an interest in community service is a real plus. "The admissions committee looks for people that are creative, involved in community service, and are trying to develop themselves into better people," says Brian T. Lohr, assistant director of MBA admissions. "If they're not committed to academic excellence and ethics we'll encourage them to look around a little, because those two things are essential."
You need to apply by April 16 for the two-year program, and by March 6 for the accelerated program, designed for those with a business undergraduate. If you have GMAT scores of 600 or above and at least two years of work experience, you'll get priority attention for a scholarship.
