STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
As part of the overall improvement in applicant quality seen at Michigan State recently, average GMAT scores for the class of 2000 hit an all-time high of 628 -- that's up nearly 20 points from just two years earlier. Work experience is up too, with those admitted in 1998 averaging four years of full-time work, compared with three years in 1996; just 2 percent of the class of 2000 had less than a year on the job, compared with 10 percent of the class of 1998.

Not only will your scores and experience need to be stronger than ever before; there's a new emphasis on personal interviews as part of the application process at Broad. Nearly 100 percent of those admitted to the class of 2000 were interviewed by admissions officers, either on campus, by telephone, or during recruiting trips to other states and countries. (In an attempt to diversify the international student mix, the school in 1998 began making recruiting trips to Canada, Mexico, and five European countries, according to Jennifer Chizuk, director of MBA admissions.) The school says it is looking for students "who appear well-suited for management careers based upon academic ability, maturity, motivation, leadership, and communication skills, as well as personal accomplishments." The priority deadline for fall admission is April 1, when international applicants and those wishing to apply for financial aid must have their paperwork in, but the school continues to accept applications until June 15.
