STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
Because of an increase in class size, and because of a decrease in the number of applicants -- from 2,129 for the class of 1999 to 1,829 for the class of 2000 -- Georgetown has become slightly less selective in the past couple of years. But you'll still need to position yourself smartly to put the odds in your favor. In addition to academic background, the school places a lot of emphasis on work experience and essay answers, according to Nancy Moncrief, assistant dean of admissions. Just 4 percent of the class of 2000 had worked full-time less than one year; the average experience was five years. Considering the fact that 87 percent of the class of 2000 are proficient in a second language, and 65 percent lived or studied abroad before entering B-school, you'd be wise to play up any global experiences you've had and how you plan to take advantage of Georgetown's international emphasis in your career.
Over the past couple of years, the admissions office has begun conducting evaluative instead of informational interviews; about 50 percent of the class of 2000 interviewed on campus, and a face-to-face can only be set up after your application is submitted in toto. Although the final deadline is April 15, the school encourages applicants to get their materials in as soon as possible; the deadline for international students and those applying for financial aid is February 1.
