STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
The admissions process at William & Mary is a rolling one, so get your application in as early as possible to get a crack at one of the 100 open spots. The school reviews applications and makes decisions at the beginning of each month. The B-school is trying to diversify its population (about 50 percent of MBAs are Virginians, compared with about 80 percent five years ago) and attract even brighter students to the program, so there are plenty of research assistantships and scholarships available. The school grants about 65 research assistantships a year, but only about five are awarded to first-year students because of the tough workload. Most of the 65 scholarships, ranging from $1,500 to full tuition, go to first-year MBAs.

The school aggressively recruits women and minorities, and has had a lot of success with women, in part because of the visibility of the Woman in Business Organization; at 42 percent, William & Mary boasts the highest percentage of women students of all of BUSINESS WEEK's Top 50 schools. The school has been less successful on the minority front, but says it offers all qualified minority students some merit-based financial assistance.

Work experience is the most important criteria the admissions office uses to assess applicants. The school is unlikely to waive its two-year minimum work experience requirement unless you are an exceptional student and had good internships during college. Personal interviews are mandatory. "We want people that will jump right in here and not be shy and fit in well with the team environment," says Susan Rivera, director of admissions. Rivera prefers that candidates come to campus, but if that's not possible, alums can interview the student and she can follow up with a phone interview.
