STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
Personal interviews are a key part of the admissions process at Owen, one of the few top B-schools to interview 100 percent of its applicants. You can meet with admissions staffers on campus in Nashville or in more than a dozen U.S. cities from Atlanta to San Francisco, as well as in select locations in Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Phone interviews are also a possibility. To arrange a campus visit -- when you can go to class and lunch with a current MBA, tour Management Hall, and attend an information session with a placement officer as well as having your evaluative sit-down with admissions -- call 1-800-288-OWEN and ask for the campus visit coordinator.

Owen's final application deadline is March 15, although the school continues to accept applications after that date if the class is not yet filled. Owen says it's looking for candidates who have "demonstrated strong work ethics and achievements, as well as vigor and imagination," those who are "highly motivated, self-directed, and possess excellent communication skills." You'll especially need the latter, since the school's small class sizes -- core courses average around 50 students -- mean more air time and more class presentations per MBA than at larger schools. Owen has been trying to attract applicants with more work experience -- about 8 percent of the class of 1998 had less than one year on the job upon beginning the program, while just 1 percent of the class of 2000 fell into that category. If you boast two or more years of full-time experience and apply by March 15, the school will mail you its decision by April 15.
