STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
In addition to the 170 students Simon admits to its mainstream 22-month program each September, another 60 to 70 gain admission the following January for an 18-month accelerated MBA option. Those who enter in January complete two quarters of core courses and then have the choice of taking a full schedule of coursework during the summer before joining the regular schedule of classes for second year; taking a part-time load of summer classes in the evening while working at an internship in the Rochester area, then taking one extra course during the second year; or pursuing a regular summer internship away from school and then finishing up their first-year requirements on top of the regular second-year schedule, which means handling two extra courses. Those who wish to enter the program in September should apply by March for financial aid consideration; otherwise, applications will be accepted up until June 1. The deadline for January entry is November 15.
Simon looks for the following criteria in selecting students: evidence of leadership and initiative; the nature and scope of prior work experience; teamwork and communication skills; recommendations; career focus; and undergraduate GPA and GMAT scores. (To encourage applications by highly qualified candidates, the school waives the $75 application fee for those who score well on the GMAT -- roughly 600 or above.) Interviews are not required but are strongly encouraged, although just 35 percent of those admitted to the class of 2000 were interviewed (many of those who were not were international applicants). If you haven't spent much time in the working world, you may have a better shot at getting in to Simon than you might at some schools -- more than 6 percent of the class of 2000 had no work experience. You can use either extracurricular or professional activities to demonstrate how well you work in teams and how you've played leadership roles, both in the essays and interviews. If you plan to visit campus, the admissions office will arrange for a student ambassador to give you a tour, escort you to a class, treat you to lunch, and chat with you about the Simon experience.
