STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
Iowa has seen a dropoff in applications in the last year, from 762 for the class of 1999 to 662 for the class of 2000. The school has also indicated that it would like to expand enrollment somewhat, to about 100 students per class, so you may find it easier to get in to the B-school now than it was a couple of years ago. That said, however, you'll also find that the average GMAT has increased, from 589 for the class of `98 to 613 for the class of 2000, as has average work experience -- whereas 20 percent of the class of `98 had less than a year of previous full-time work before entering the program, just 7 percent of the class of 2000 falls into that category. You'll also find that admissions interviews, once a rare occurrence, are now required, either on campus or by telephone with admissions staff, or with an Iowa alum in your local area.

The school says it places a good deal of emphasis on essays, so you'll want to spend some time crafting your answers to the three questions on the application that have to do with how an Iowa education fits into your career plans, how you've demonstrated potential for success, and how classmates might learn from you. You've got plenty of time to apply -- the school's final deadline for fall admission isn't until July 15.
