STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
Although 15 percent of graduate students enter Illinois' B-school with less than a year's work experience, the admissions office points out that most of them enroll in the joint degree programs, and MBAs on average have worked full-time for four years before returning to school. Students are admitted for the fall semester only on a rolling admissions schedule that begins making decisions in January; international students must apply by February 1 and domestic students no later than April 1.
Personal interviews are not required; in fact, only 45 percent of applicants for the class of 2000 were interviewed. However, the school would like to make the interview more of a key part of the admissions process. In an attempt to increase the quality of the applicant pool, Illinois hosts four Preview Weekends between December and April in which the B-school flies in, at the school's expense, a total of some 200 promising candidates from around the U.S. and Mexico to check out the campus. If you're interested in visiting -- even if you have to foot the bill yourself -- call the admissions office to arrange for a tour, meetings with current students, and class attendance.

Grading System
In the core curriculum, grades are based on a statistical method called the "z-score." Individual scores are normed in several ways against the total population and across integrated subjects. Students then receive a grade of A through F for each integrated module. The median grade is a B. In the second year, grades are determined in a traditional manner and grades of A through F are awarded.
