STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
An unfortunate incident in which all the computers in the admissions office were stolen, including a database of some 2000 prospective students requesting information on the MBA program, caused a dip in the number of applicants to Georgia's B-school in 1998. Nevertheless, the school still boasts a high level of selectivity, admitting only 25 percent of those who applied-making Georgia the second most selective Runner-Up school after the University of Arizona. One reason is the small nature of the program. Student quality has also steadily increased in recent years, with the average GMAT of 640 for the Class of 2000 approximating those of such higher-ranked schools as the University of North Carolina and Indiana University.
Apply early. Although the final deadline isn't until July, most applications are received by February 1 for the one-year program and March 1 for the two-year program. Applications sent in after those dates are likely to be at a competitive disadvantage, not only for admission but for those highly sought-after scholarships and assistantships; if you want financial aid, get your paperwork in by February 1.
While on-campus interviews are not mandatory, they are strongly encouraged. About 50 percent of those admitted to the Class of 2000 were interviewed. About 7 percent of the class had less than a year's work experience, just half the 14 percent without experience who enrolled with the Class of 1998. Applicants should be able to demonstrate both knowledge of calculus and computer proficiency prior to enrollment. |
