STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
Over the next 10 years, Dean Mark Zupan wants to double the size of the MBA program, but not at the expense of quality. In fact, the school is tightening up its admissions requirements. Work experience is becoming an increasingly important part of the equation. On average, the Class of 2000 had five years of work experience before entering the program; about 10 percent had less than a year on the job. Starting in the fall of 1999, candidates will need a minimum of two years' work experience to gain admittance to the program. "Our biggest goal is raising the quality of students," says Zupan. "I'd rather see the program remain the same size if we can't get more quality students."
Because there is a heavy quantitative component to the program, applicants must have completed undergraduate algebra and calculus before entering. Although interviews are not required, you should try to schedule one if you can. The admissions director, Susan Salinas Wong, personally interviewed 60 percent of applicants in 1997. "We strongly encourage interviews. Anybody who doesn't interview should," Wong advises. "An interview could make or break an admissions decision."
