STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
| |
Thunderbird's high selectivity number -- the school accepted 68 percent of applicants to the class of 2000 -- is somewhat deceptive, because the school's unique focus and requirements creates a pool of candidates that is already self-selected. And even though the average GMAT of 601 -- among the very lowest of the 61 schools surveyed by Business Week -- might make acceptance seem a shoo-in for those with higher scores, you'll have a definite advantage if you can also demonstrate international exposure, particularly if you've worked overseas. Indeed, the application essays ask you to describe your unique international background or cross-cultural perspective, as well as explain how your career objectives will be served by earning an MIM -- a Master of International Management (as opposed to an MBA).
Walking tours of the campus, led by student "ambassadors," are scheduled every Monday, Thursday, and Friday during the school year beginning at noon. You'll also get a complimentary lunch in the dining hall and an information session with the admissions office. Personal interviews are not required, but about two-thirds of admitted applicants do interview, either with admissions officers on campus or at recruiting events around the world or with one of the school's farflung alums, who can be found in every U.S. state and territory and some 135 other nations. What other American B-school can set you up to speak with a graduate in Burkina Faso or Kyrgyzstan?
