STRATEGY FOR APPLICANTS
Mays has tightened its admissions requirements considerably in the last few years; as a result, the school is now significantly more selective: Whereas 53 percent of applicants were accepted in 1994, only 33 percent got in in 1998. All candidates must now have at least two years of full-time work experience (the school says that in "rare instances," there's leeway for those with less time on the job if you can "present truly outstanding evidence of leadership through extracurricular and community activities as well as superior academic credentials). All applicants must also interview, either in person or by phone, with admissions officers.

The B-school has a number of scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships which can help defray the already low cost of tuition. Among them are the Lechner Fellowship, which provides $12,000 for 12 months; the Mitte Fellowship, which provides $10,000 over 21 months; and Mays Fellowships, which pay a significant portion of tuition for all four semesters. About 25 graduate assistants are chosen to work with B-school faculty, with resident tuition status granted and a monthly stipend paid. Anyone wishing to apply for financial assistance is strongly encouraged to have application materials in by the priority deadline of February 1, when the first round of awards are announced.
