1999 Profile Update School Profile School Statistics Graduates' Comments: The University of Tennessee at Knoxville provides an excellent MBA education for a reasonable tuition charge ($8,000 tuition for out-of-staters). I think it would be hard to find a better buy out there. The in-state rate for schools in my home state were more than UT's out-of-state rate. --Accounts Manager The University of Tennessee offers the biggest bang for the buck. Since it is a state school, tuition is low but the quality of the education received is not sacrificed. Many Fortune 500 companies recruit on campus but for limited concentrations. --Finance The MBA program at U175 was a great value. The reasonable tuition will allow me to gain very valuable tools without substantial debt. --Finance The education was a bargain compared to the cost of tuition. The first year is centered around a core of classes that every MBA takes together. Almost all of the first-year work is team-based, especially the four major projects (called Milestones). During the second year, students take regular MBA classes and most of the work is individual, although it varies by instructor. --Operations The University of Tennessee's MBA program is unique in that there are only two courses, 15 credit hours each, the first year. During that time period, teaching was based on the "just-in-time" philosophy. For example: One day I may have classes in statistics and marketing, while the next I would have finance and operations management and the next I would have marketing and business law. Whatever classes were taught during a certain time period of the year depended upon the upcoming milestone. During this first year, the entire first-year class worked for a real company learning all aspects of the company. Our milestones were always presentations to professionals either from the corporation or from the business community. Additionally, our entire first year was spent on one team of five students who represented the logistics, finance, marketing, ops management, and info-tech concentrations. What this first year offered was a total immersion in all business functions while at the same time offering practical learning and experience. Although, the second year was based on what courses each student wanted to take, much of the same qualities of the first year prevailed. In fact, because I chose marketing as one of two of my concentrations, I was able, along with my peers in the marketing concentration, to work for a Fortune 500 company. --Marketing My impetus for returning to the University of Tennessee was the incredible Logistics & Transportation program. Half of the MBAs in my class ended up concentrating in this area. The logistics faculty leave no stone unturned when it comes to educating future logistics managers. --Consulting UT has a very hands-on, application-oriented MBA program. Theory is taught to us as we need it to solve problems. I feel that it really prepared me for a job in the business arena, because we were allowed to tackle real-world problems in a team-based environment. The program is unique, because we have the opportunity to work closely with real companies to help solve some of the issues that they are facing. --Finance At Tennessee there were numerous opportunities to develop leadership skills. While many times the workload was overwhelming, there was always a strong sense of accomplishment and satisfaction to go along with the frustration and ambiguity. I returned to school to assist in a career shift. The MBA opened new doors for the second half of my career that otherwise would have been closed or non-existent. --Marketing UT Knoxville is a great school that emphasizes team-based learning. The marketing department is excellent and has allowed me to gain a very good understanding of all marketing principles. I would highly recommend this school to any person interested in obtaining a real knowledge base. --Sales Representative I am pleased with my decision to pursue an MBA. The learning extends well beyond the classroom in a full-time, rigorous MBA Program, providing the opportunity to develop and improve time management, as well as "people" and strategic thinking skills. I have competed in two MBA case competitions (one of which we won) and believe my MBA education has adequately prepared me to compete with other MBAs and thrive in the increasingly dynamic and global business environment. --Finance UT is a great school, but it could do a much better job in proactively assisting students to find jobs. The placement director is totally ineffective. --IT Consultant U175 needs new facilities with multimedia classrooms in order to remain competitive. --Operations Back to Top 1999 Profile Update School Profile School Statistics |
