1999 Profile Update School Profile School Statistics Graduates' Comments: Our school is encouraging increased outside work experience of its applicants and is encouraging more women to apply. I gained a lot from my experience in the program and felt I was surrounded by outstanding students. Looking back, I wish I had taken the time to gain the outside work experience so I could be a more-active contributor to the program. I felt that the program's desire to have more women was a more important priority than having applicants with work experience. --Accounting Brigham Young University offers a joint degree program (MBA/MS in mechanical engineering). The emphasis is an integrated team approach to new product development. I choose BYU over other schools because of this program and because of the funding available to those accepted into the joint degree program. The combined degree enhanced my educational experience tremendously. The job offers exceeded my expectations and the personal faculty involvement and help were phenomenal. --Accounting I have always wanted to attend BYU because of the economic benefits and the caliber of teachers. In my experience, the faculty comprised many teachers who are recognized as being among the leading authorities in their fields. Their choice to come to BYU was a religious choice and not necessarily a career-driven choice. This means access to teachers that would be otherwise inaccessible at other schools. This is the secret of BYU. --Consulting I believe there are things in this school that you will never find in any other place. To give just one example: I had a class on creativity. In it we were taught to go beyond our current levels of performance to not only produce more and better goods, but to actually serve better our fellows. I learned in that class to see the problems we have in this world. --Finance BYU's MBA Program was an excellent value for the money! My favorite feature of the program was the student body. The students were good, well-balanced people as well as outstanding analytical thinkers. --Finance For the money, BYU is the best MBA program available. It has an excellent faculty, and since there is no PhD program, the top faculty are teaching MBA classes instead of working only with PhD students. --Finance BYU provides an excellent education, especially in terms of value. Tuition is highly subsidized and professors are current leaders in their fields. It's a smaller program which allows greater access to professors as well as many opportunities to develop both personal and professional relationships. Because there is not a doctoral program, the MBA program is taught by the best professors on staff and the students receive the time and attention they deserve. --Marketing Brigham Young's MBA program was very rewarding to me because of three things: 1. Small classroom size allowing much more discussion, 2. Great response rate from the faculty and administration to student's needs and expectations, 3. Emphasis on balancing a difficult work load with positive colleague relationships--competitive, yet cooperative academic experience. --Finance I liked the fact that such a large percentage of the students were bilingual (70%) and that a large portion of the student population had international experience. --Marketing The BYU MBA program is really good, and the newly appointed MBA Director has some great plans for improvement. They have already implemented a plan to switch the core classes for next year's entering class to an 8-week module, highly integrated format. Even more interesting is the new emphasis on allowing students to take classes targeting a specific industry during the first year instead of taking general business courses. This change will greatly increase the internship opportunities of the students at the end of their first year. --Marketing BYU has and is continuing to undergo a positive transformation. We recently hired a new Director for the MBA program from outside of the school. This new director is extremely motivated to continue to make the changes recommended by all the stakeholders to improve the program and increase its value to all involved. Although BYU is criticized by some for having a lack of diversity. I felt that the international students (which made up 25%-30% of the class) along with other minority groups added significantly to the strength and richness of our class.--No career path given BYU does not rank the students in the MBA program. In addition, much of the required coursework is completed in groups. These two factors reduced the amount of competition felt in the program and enhanced a cooperative learning environment. Despite being a "second tier" program, Brigham Young's MBA program gave me experience in all the areas for which I was looking. In addition, the curriculum is undergoing a substantial change to improve quantitative skills in accounting and information systems, business law, strategy, and field studies (practical business applications). --Finance Brigham Young has a great program. Although the finance emphasis is considered BYU's strong point, I feel that the marketing emphasis is greatly underrated. Two of the best professors teach various marketing and sales courses. The students in their classes thoroughly enjoy learning from them, because of their positive attitudes and real-life experience. --Consulting The emphasis placed on marketing is outstanding. The marketing professors taught me more useful information than most of my other elective courses combined. They talk with us whenever they can about making changes to the program that will help us prepare for marketing jobs in top companies. I am very happy with the marketing tools they taught us. I was able to use these tools to help secure an offer from the marketing department of a major Japanese automaker. --No career path given The program placed a lot of emphasis on helping us catch the vision of responsible leadership in the workplace. We often discussed the problems downsizing creates and the value of the people we will work with and who work for us. The program emphasized that we concentrate on the human element, and not just the numbers, in making management decisions. I have a better appreciation for the kinds of responsibilities I will assume when I move into management positions.--No career path given I was thrilled with the quality of the companies that recruit here at BYU. We have a great mix of large and small companies. More and more companies are coming to BYU looking for marketing people. High-tech companies are coming as well. I did an internship with Intel in Santa Clara, Calif., this past summer, and decided to work there full time after graduation. I worked with students from a lot of top twenty schools while I was at Intel. I felt that I competed well against them, and I feel the caliber of the other students here at BYU's program is on par with the students from those schools. --Marketing Back to Top 1999 Profile Update School Profile School Statistics |
