STUDENT COMMENTS
Drake is a program that not only focuses on the individual but also on the group efforts. The main classes that I found to be extremely beneficial in my line of work have been with Mary Edrington. She was able to open my eyes and explain real life marketing scenarios to me. Not only do the students at Drake have a beneficial intimate program, but they also insist upon integrating our work with real life such as through
The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, and other publications. This integration keeps the mind moving either with or ahead of the present world. The advancements in technology and teaching style continue, and the world not only moves at a faster pace, but also at a more intellectually integrated pace.
Drake is very good at promoting outside learning to complement your in class learning. I'm in the middle of my third internship and have a fourth lined up for this summer. I wholeheartedly endorse Drake for any undergraduate student interested in accounting or business.
Job fairs are frequent, résumé workshops are as well. There are constantly speakers coming in to help with interviewing and networking skills.
Through dinners and different events we have been exposed to networking techniques, interviewing techniques, and résumé-writing techniques. These have all helped to make us more marketable in the business world. Also, professional business frats are on campus to develop those who seek them out. I am apart of Alpha Kappa Psi on campus.
Drake has an average business school compared with other friends I have that go to other schools. Where Drake excels is in its actuarial science program. That is what sets Drake's business school apart from many others.
I have been very suprised by comments I hear from other students who attend other business programs throughout the country. I feel like I get immediate assistance (both academically and administratively) whenever I need it. The teachers are all former professionals, which is very encouraging, and our final capstone project is very unique and is very helpful in building teamwork skills and helps us to realize that everything we learned has a real-life application.
Drake is an amazing school that I think a lot of people discount for its size. This has been great for me as I have had unbelievable access to my professors for help and advice.
For a business school of its size, Drake has gone beyond the expectations of many and, at times, has proven to be a leading provider of education to many bright and innovative people. The kind of opportunities present in Des Moines, Iowa, are unique and may be difficult to come by, but attending Drake's business program allows one to explore these opportunities with ease and with certain advantages over the rest of the Iowa crowd.
My school gave me the opportunity to find full-time employment during the fall semester before I graduate in spring.
The opportunities that I have had while attending Drake have far exceeded my expectations. The professors encourage the students and expect them to think at a higher level. The standards are set much higher, but due to the program there is plenty of opportunity to rise to the occasion.
The breadth of courses offered at the Drake College of Business and Public Administration is excellent. I believe these courses are helpful in providing insight into many facets of the business world. Some professors are less than exceptional but there are a few that excel in translating the business world to the classroom.
Extremely helpful advisers and administration. They just get it.
The Career Fairs and "Meet the Firms" night do an amazing job of bringing great companies on campus. Being an accounting major, I am very interested in the Big Four accounting firms. All but PWC come to campus for recruitment efforts. I had the opportunity to participate in the on-campus interview and then was selected to participate in the office interivew for KPMG, EY, and D&T. It was amazing how much these big firms were recruiting us and not so much me convincing them.
Many Drake grads come back to Drake for these recruitment events so the interviewers know the caliber of employee a Drake student can be. Additionally, with so many insurance companies and other corporate offices in the state of Iowa, many come to Drake to recruit great business majors. I have several opportunities with such companies as Principal Financial Group and John Deere through the College of Business and Public Administration at Drake University.
In terms of planning for the future, over the last couple of years the college of business has been really improving their job placement advising and services.
I came to Drake mainly because of the premier Actuarial Science program, which exceeded my expectations. However, I did not realize the value in Drake's CBPA from the amazingly helpful people in the office to the opportunities offered outside of classes. I have been impressed by the CBPA's consistent commitment to improvement.
The career services area has always been an issue at Drake. It is the No. 1 complaint after graduation. Dean Blum does a good job of trying to help students with plans after graduation but the career services representative is new and not very helpful yet. I hope to see this area improve for Drake students in the future.
Most of my professors have played a large role in my learning experience. I have been able to apply current concepts to my job in real time. Each professor supported me and were very helpful in finding an internship/full-time job. I attribute a lot of this peronsal touch to the small class sizes.
I have really enjoyed my time here at Drake University so far. The faculty are amazing! Not only do they provide us with first-class lectures but they also strive to get to learn your name and get to know you as an individual.
The professors are friendly and available to meet outside of class, whether it is for help with class material or just to talk. The classes provide excellent information to prepare the students for a job after graduation. Many professors specifically mention what information will be on the CPA exam and some give real-world examples. Overall, I feel that my classes have well prepared me for a full-time job once I graduate.
