STUDENT COMMENTS
The best thing that I was able to do for myself was to study abroad on an Economics program in Australia and New Zealand, which has opened my eyes to new possibilities. I cannot say I have a degree in something that I am passionate about and four-and-a-half years later I feel that I have missed part of the college experience worrying about something that will guide the rest of my life.
Overall Delaware helped me to become extremely prepared for entering the workforce. From my experiences at Delaware I was able to get an internship that turned into an excellent job opportunity.
In college, recruitment is key. Everyone's main goal is to get out of college with a decent job. The University of Delaware is exemplary in the field of recruitment. It seems every day there is a different business on campus ready to recruit and interview. They have an excellent location, branching out into Philly, New York, Washington, and Boston. More important, from what I've seen, the bulk of job recruiters come to the business college of the University of Delaware, further enhancing this college's reputation and character.
Career Services does a great job in senior year to get students exposed to the workforce. The MIS department has done an excellent job in getting recruiters to the school and setting up information sessions. The department has stressed getting involved in the job search early on, which has helped a lot.
The Blue Hen Investment Club, which I started in as a freshman and now am president of as a senior, manages over $1 million of the university endowment money and has had a tremendous impact on my business education here at UD. We get real hands-on experience without faculty watching over our shoulder all the time, and last year we were fortunate enough to meet Warren Buffett and pick his brain for a while. The BHIC has been an invaluable experience for me and many others, and is another reason why UD is the right place for me.
I came to the University of Delaware not really knowing what I wanted to do. I decided to take some business classes to see if I was interested in that field and I quickly learned that I found the information interesting and fun. I then applied to the business school and was accepted and have pursued a degree in marketing. I have been very pleased with my experience here and would highly recommend the University to anyone.
The academic advising office, the B & E professors, and Diana Wright do an amazing job preparing the business students for entry into the real world and Corporate America.
UD's business program really stresses business communication and writing skills. The program does a good job of incorporating this, as well as group work, into each upper-level class. I am currently taking classes where groups get to analyze certain business models and make recommendations. Whereas the introductory classes on marketing, economics, and finance were more or less boring because they dealt with fundamentals, classes now allow me to be much more creative and thus are exciting. Dan Freeman, professor of Strategy of the Firm (BUAD 479), provides valuable feedback to each group. In doing so he directs and corrects one's strategy, allowing for more effecient business models.
Overall, I have had an excellent experience at the University of Delaware. The faculty in the business school has been completely qualified, extremely helpful, and sincerely concerned with the best interests of the students. In addition to preparing me for a successful career, the networking opportunities provided by the business program have played a large part in my opportunity to begin working at a Big Four accounting firm upon graduation.
I had to wait until junior year to take a single marketing course....and I'm a marketing major. Yet I had to take two semesters of stat, and four semesters of accounting to prepare for the business major. They don't offer introductory business courses in specific areas so it was hard to know if I wanted to go into marketing until I was halfway through school and locked into a business major because of all the prerequisites I had already taken.
The business program at the University of Delaware is always actively promoting companies that are visiting through e-mails, banners, and announcements in class. I always know when companies are coming, and I can pick and choose which ones I would like to attend. Also, my teachers have always been available for extra help or advice. They always make themselves accessible.
The school has done as much as they could in terms of preparing its students for their futures, but it is still extremely hard to eliminate the Delaware stereotype, which steers away employers.
I would like to mention the work the Accounting and MIS advisers did to bring in more companies to recruit to our school and thereby opening up more opportunities for the students. They have done an excellent job.
The University of Delaware's business school has grown into a stellar college whose staff is one of a kind. Every professor in the business school has experience in their special field and passes along their vast wealth of knowledge to their students. I am glad that I attend the University of Delaware's business school and would not have it any other way.
As my academic career progressed in the business school I found that every teacher I had was better and more demanding then the last. I feel like I am at a huge advantage having gone to the University of Delaware because the teachers I've had and the students I've worked with have forced me to grow academically. In addtion, I think it's important to note that I have had the privilege of also cultivating leadership and people skills that will serve me wonders in the business world as a result of being part of a very strong Greek system at the University of Delaware. Much can be attributed to the exceptional faculty who care about the students and their academic and social journeys through college.
The only thing I wish the career center did better with is having firms from other areas of the country come in to recruit. The only firms we see are in our immediate area. The professors and advisers are very available, and will give you every opportunity that they are capable of. The quality of the honors professors is sometimes questionable, but the staff overall is amazingly talented and intelligent.
The feeling I get from attending the University of Delaware is one of being lifted up by my pants, flipped upside-down, and shaken repeatedly until all the loose change falls out of my pockets. Maybe I just notice these things because I'm a finance major but it seems as if the university constantly tries to suck me dry of money until all I have left is blood. They'd take my blood too if they could find someone to sell it to.
The programs are very well-rounded and flexible so that a student can aquire multiple degrees and minors without the extra amounts of time spent. Since many of the courses are closely related, they can fulfill requirements for other degrees.
Too much cheating going on in this school...every form imaginable.
The University of Delaware's accounting program is outstanding. The overall experience is great and the progam is better than advertised. I will recommend the program to anyone seeking a profession in the accounting field.
