CLASS OF 2004 GRADUATE COMMENTS

I would definitely urge friends or colleagues to enroll in the University of Washington's full-time MBA program. I was incredibly impressed with the caliber of my fellow classmates, which far exceeded my expectations, and with the quality of the faculty.--Marketing

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] I am part of a specialized five-year BSIE/MBA program, designed for undergraduates to come straight from industrial engineering into the MBA. Not all 21-year-olds are ready for MBA life, and many aren't sure what they want to do with their careers, so I don't believe that it would be good for everyone, especially if you haven't had good internship or extracurricular experience. I don't think I'd recommend it to all my friends who are working either, because although UW is improving quite a bit, I think there's value in attending a top-10 program. Nevertheless, UW is definitely a great value for the money, so I'd highly recommend it as the best school in the Northwest.--Consulting

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The University of Washington Business School MBA program offers a wonderful academic, professional, and social experience. The program is tremendously collaborative and you will build strong relationships with peers and prominent members of the business community. Furthermore, the program and community possess a very entrepreneurial spirit, which is essential to succeeding in today's business climate. You will learn the ability to foster and drive innovation and entrepreneurship.--Investment Banking

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The UW program is headed in the right direction. The core faculty is solid. The school is building strong relationships with the business community and its leaders. There are plans to build a new business school in the near future. I learned and accomplished more than I ever thought possible. There were many things that I was unable to do because I simply did not have enough time.--Finance

I worked with two classmates on a field study project for a local game company for its logistics management. It gave me practical knowledge of the transportation network in the United States. I also learned how to approach different issues and how to set up contingency plans beforehand.--Not Available

[Did consulting project enhance learning?] I participated in several such projects, done in coordination with classes (management, marketing) rather than independently. It was a great experience to have feedback from professionals on what they were seeking. There was good faculty assistance, too, though I wish there had been more feedback at the end of the course.--Not Available

A high percentage of classes in the second year require group projects done for existing companies. Working with an organization highlights the everyday challenges of putting the theories into practice and making them work. It also gives you an opportunity to add value to a smaller corporation or not-for-profit that might not have the resources available to complete such a project.--Marketing

I did several outside consulting projects with firms in the area. I learned some key marketing, consulting, and strategy skills. The skills were helpful in my job search, plus I got to apply what I was learning in classes.--Consulting

I worked on an e-biz project for Trails.com, which was an excellent opportunity to apply a number of skills related to coursework. The project involved market research, e-biz stategy, e-biz economics, and stategic management of technology and actually gave me chance to apply a number of concepts I had learned about, but maybe didn't fully understand until actually seeing them in action. The project was probably one of the most useful aspects of my B-school education.--Human Resources

The UW MBA program is often overlooked because we are small and most of our graduates tend to stay in the area. Who could blame them? It's beautiful here. But this is a fantastic program. Our students have consistently demonstrated their ability to outperfom the big East Coast schools, and while many other schools surpass us in terms of endowments, fancy buildings, and professors who are best-selling authors, the quality of the education provided is among the best in the United States.--Human Resources

The University of Washington was very good to international students, however, the biggest drawback is lack of financial aid for those of us caught by the steep price increases. I mean, one cannot be expected to just "come up" with $13,000 extra for fees. I feel that the tuition costs should be set in stone at the time of application and further increases after that should only affect the subsequent year's batch, for purposes of financial planning. Loans are generally unavailable for international students, so a lot of us ended up in a bind. If the school wants to continually increase fees, it should state so in the application form to avoid causing hardship to students who choose to study in the United States (as opposed to Europe).--Marketing

The UW MBA program is not a flashy or high-profile program. But the people are great. From the students to the staff and the professors, the people at UW are top-notch. If someone is looking for a brand-name school to put on his résumé, he should look elsewhere. If he is looking for a place where he can build his business skills while being surrounded by great people, UW is the place.--Not Available

The University of Washington MBA proram is in a unique position as it experiences the challenges and growing pains of becoming a top-tier program. The dedication of the program and the students to strong leadership in the business and civic community are what set UW apart.--Marketing
