CLASS OF 2004 GRADUATE COMMENTS
I highly recommend an Owen MBA because of the acceleration of the program (mod system) and the small class size. However, the program is not necessarily the best choice if you want to be located outside of the Southeast in something other than finance.--Finance
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Vanderbilt was an incredibly well-rounded, team-oriented program. It was a great learning experience and networking opportunity for everyone.--Human Resources
Vanderbilt offers an excellent value-proposition to prospective MBA students. It offers a teamwork-oriented and collegial environment where students are encouraged to excel. Professors at Vanderbilt have strong teaching acumen and are considered world-class researchers. The course selection is wide-ranging and is constantly being updated and reviewed. The Career Management Center is well run and offers numerous opportunities to interview with world-class companies. Additionally, Nashville is a beautiful city that offers a relatively low cost of living.--Marketing
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Vanderbilt offers the best of all worlds. Its greatest asset is the people who come from all over the world with vastly different experiences. The culture encourages learning from one another. Whether you are looking for a general business education or to strengthen a specific skill set, you will find it at Vanderbilt. The registrar is flexible with allowing each student to pursue his/her goals as desired -- even if that requires negotiating with other schools on the campus. Locally, nationally, and internationally, the school has a remarkable reputation for graduating intelligent and distinguished employees and managers.--Not Available
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The character and attitude of the student body is so much more supportive than those of any other school I experienced. As a student from a fairly non-traditional background (construction management), I needed a lot of support in my early days, and I found that the student body was not only willing but eager to help out.--Investment Banking
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Owen is a place where you enjoy learning and enjoy spending time with your classmates. You can tailor your experience to your preferences.--Finance
I helped Saks Incorporated understand the dynamics of the furniture and home-decor market. At the time, the company was considering increasing its presence in that arena. I ultimately ended up presenting the findings of our team to the CEO and CFO along with several other key members of the organization.--Finance
During my first year at Vanderbilt, I had an opportunity to conduct a strategic marketing project with a private-label manufacturer of health and beauty-aid consumer products. This project allowed me to interface with Category Managers at top retailers. The experience I gained through this project not only helped me to get a great job at Georgia-Pacific, but will prove invaluable to me as an associate brand manager.--Marketing
[Did consulting project enhance learning?] We worked with a start-up PR firm in Nashville. The project goal was to analyze internal problems affecting job performance and deliverables to clients. It put into practice the theory provided in class. It also broadened my network of Nashville business men and women.--Investment Banking
I worked for a local real estate development company, which educated me in the field with hands-on work, and has allowed me access into the industry for full-time work. I also consulted/advised for a small local restaurant franchise, which was a fun and rewarding learning experience as well.--Finance
As part of my project with a local magazine publisher, I developed a financial model to determine whether the company should expand to statewide coverage. The project provided me an excellent opportunity to put to use my classroom financial modeling skills and to learn more about the publishing industry.--Finance
"Fit" was very important in my decision to attend Vanderbilt. The students and faculty are perhaps Owen's greatest asset. I believe the school is poised for great things with the recent change in the dean's office. Nashville is a great city in which to live, offering many big city amenities while retaining a small-town feel.--Marketing
Vanderbilt's responsiveness to the changing MBA market has been fantastic. Because of past mistakes, the program has had a difficult time in the rankings lately. However, I doubt that the school could have worked harder to remedy the situation. I believe that Vanderbilt will only continue to improve.--Venture Capital/Private Equity
[Did consulting project enhance learning?] As a career changer, I was able to receive valuable hands on experience in finance, which enhanced my classroom learning.--Finance
The Owen community was extremely supportive and interactive. The environment encouraged student ownership to help improve the learning environment as well as the recruitment and placement processes.--Finance
I wrote a marketing plan for a new product for a start-up pharma company. The project led to my summer internship and then indirectly to the job I landed after school. By writing the marketing plan, I was able to see how the different parts of marketing that we learned in class fit together.--Marketing
My classmates and the relationships I have developed with them were one of the most precious aspects of my time at Owen. It's a tight community, which not many other schools can claim to have.--Finance
