CLASS OF 2004 GRADUATE COMMENTS
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] If my friend was interested in real estate, sustainable enterprise, or entrepreneurship, I would recommend UNC without question. It is also a very solid school for people with broader interests, such as marketing or finance.--Marketing
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Although there are other schools that are historically noted as being more competitive, the program at Kenan-Flagler offers a unique balance. That balance is carefully struck between academics and network building, analytical and quantitative work, and individual and teamwork. Teamwork is not optional, but essential, as it should be because it is so vital for success within a corporation. If you are a team player, this is the school for you. If you are not a team player, you need Kenan-Flagler even more.--Finance
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] This MBA program exceeded my expectations in terms of teaching quality, experience of students in my classes, and job search education. The small alumni base can be a detriment for career-ladder climbers.--Marketing
I would recommend the MBA program at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School to my friends for two reasons. First, everyone here is talented and driven. There are no "easy" days here, particularly in the first year of the MBA program. The curriculum is intense and you really have to work hard to keep up. Second, everyone here is collegial and friendly. This extends to the faculty and the administration. There is a great social atmosphere here and the happy hours are well attended. I think this program epitomizes the "work hard, play hard" theme and, as a result, produces talented yet humble graduates who are team players.--Not Available
UNC's program, after stumbling through the loss of the dean, is definitely on the rise. The unique combination of innovative programs like Sustainable Enterprise and Entrepreneurship along with an extremely dedicated staff and the friendliest student body in the top-25 makes UNC a good choice for anyone choosing an MBA program -- the exception would be anyone looking for an urban experience or really wanting to be on the West Coast. It's definitely hard to get there from NC.--Nonprofit
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The atmosphere is one of learning for self improvement and not purely for advancement. Consequently, students are extremely helpful with academic, professional, and personal matters as they arise and if you seek their help. The curriculum is solid, professors are eager to help in and out of class, there are plenty of diverse recruiters coming to campus, and the school is on track to become vastly better under the current leadership.--Marketing
I worked on an "independent study" for a local Chapel Hill start-up company. It allowed me to weave together several concepts I'd learned in class and gave me real-life experience in those areas. Additionally, though my research skills had not been used extensively during the program, they got a workout during the independent study.--Marketing
I enjoyed working on a practicum project with three other students. We assisted Duke University Medical Center in the improvement of some of their existing operational processes. Issues we studied included throughput time, communication, internal culture and politics, and financial issues to improve patient care. It was very gratifying to see how much assistance we could give to an existing organization with the reputation of Duke University Medical Center. The classroom training we had recieved proved very useful and the physicians to whom we utimately made our recommendations were very grateful for the assistance.--Not Available
I worked for an education investment fund, which taught me a lot about education reform and directly led to a summer internship between my first and second year.--Nonprofit
We worked on a sales consulting project for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. We assessed some of the problems that they were having motivating employees and used analytics to propose possible solutions.--Not Available
Group consulting projects are required in the first-year business-plan exercise. Additionally, I was able to do two independent studies. One study was for the Inter American Development Bank and the other was for a local startup bio-tech company. Both were great experiences and added tremendously to my MBA experience.--Investment Banking
I participated in a cost-benefit analysis project for Proctor & Gamble, evaluating the possibility of a water-purifier tablet being marketed in developing countries -- a truly great real-world experience.--Consulting
Kenan-Flagler was a business school in transition during my years here. The leadership of a new dean should help the school hone its goals and focus.--Finance
I only applied to one school because at the time I applied and was admitted it was the best value, however two months before school started tuition more than doubled and rankings went down. If I had known that tuition would have taken such a huge increase, I would have applied to other schools.--Operations
The MBA experience has enriched my thinking and orientation, both personally and professionally. Not only did I re-tool myself during the two years at UNC-CH, I learned a lot more about human and organizational behavior, teamwork, leadership, and communication. These sets of learning were also important for me since I am an international student in the United States. I feel that I have matured during the past two years. It was totally worth it.--Not Available
I am so happy to be a graduate of UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School. When I was applying to schools, I wanted a place where I could receive a great education, and be positioned for success in my future professional endeavors. I got this and more. The community at UNC is extremely collegial and supportive. I know I can call on all my classmates and faculty should I need any help later down the road. The community is what makes this place special, and I am so proud to be a Tarheel!--Marketing
