CLASS OF 2004 GRADUATE COMMENTS

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] MIT Sloan has an amazing balance between soft skills and hardcore analytical/quantitative skills. It is also linked to the best research institution in the country. The opportunities for entrepreneurship here are boundless.--Marketing

Sloan is not for everyone. It certainly has a heavy load of quant work. I would recommend Sloan specifically to my friends interested in finance, technology, and entrepreneurship. If, instead, they were more interested in general management and private equity and in establishing a strong network, I might encourage them to enroll at HBS. If they were intent on staying on the West Coast, I would certainly urge them to go to Stanford.--Entrepreneurship

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] I think MIT Sloan offers a great combination of top-notch students and faculty and a humble help-the-world attitude.--Entrepreneurship

Sloan presents you with challenges that are frightening at first. But with the outstanding academic training and supportive classmates, you know you will achieve every bit of your potential.--Investment Banking

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] MIT Sloan is simply the best program if you come from a technical background and want to improve your business skills. Innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology are core assets of MIT Sloan, and those are perfectly aligned with my objectives in my professional life, as well as most people I know. Quality of people -- talent, intelligence, social skills -- were key to my experience in MIT Sloan. Finally, MIT Sloan gives you the flexibility to make whatever you want out of your MBA: I was able to do consulting in India and South America, collaborate with a professor on a book and publish several papers, organize two major student-led conferences, meet presidents of countries, CEOs of companies, and key personalities from the world, and I even ran a marathon!--Consulting

There is no doubt in my mind that the Sloan MBA program is the place to pursue an MBA. Like other top programs, it has a great brand and a rigorous education. What sets it a part are the other students; compared to students I've met from other MBA programs, they are very down-to-earth and friendly.--Information Technology

[Did consulting project enhance learning?] It was an incredible opportunity because my team and I got to work on a consulting project for a successful entrepreneur in Sydney. We helped the entrepreneur in developing the globalization strategy for its business in a two-month project with a three-week internship in Australia. It was an amazing real-life case where we got to understand all the issues faced by an entrepreneur when developing a start up.--Consulting

Probably half of all the classes I took at Sloan entailed a project with an outside company. In every case, those projects strongly enhanced the learning experience. Some of the more interesting projects occured overseas during January. I traveled to Chile for three-and-a-half weeks to consult for a local manufacturing company exploring new channel strategies.--Marketing

Getting to work as a "consulting team" for a startup biotech company was one of the highlights of my time at Sloan. Sloan's curriculum is designed around building management skills by tackling real-world problems. My "e-lab" experience taught me leadership, teamwork, client, and project-management skills, all while immersing me in the industry I am soon going to be part of. The real proof of success came in the way of having two of our team of five (myself and a colleague) being retained after the term as part-time consultants for our client.--Consulting

I engaged in four major outside consulting projects through school. One was to develop a university partnership strategy for a small nonprofit in Boston, one was with another large Boston nonprofit to create and implement a new compensation policy, one was to work on enhancing customer satisfaction for a spa in Western Massachusetts, and the last one was to develop a market-entry strategy for a medical devices startup in New Zealand. Sloan has tremendous opportunities to put classroom learnings to practical use in companies in a wide variety of areas, from local nonprofits and start ups to companies in developing countries and major foreign multinationals. It is a great experience to be able to feel like you're having an impact while still in B-school.--Finance

MIT Sloan far exceeded my expectations. I was a bit afraid that the school would be heavily populated with nothing but quant-jocks and pencil-protector-wearing geeks. Nothing could be further from the truth. The student body is exceedingly intelligent, but they are also some of the greatest people I've had the opportunity to spend time with. Choosing Sloan over the other top-10 business schools was the best decision I ever made.--Finance

As a complete career-changer, I think the only reason I am now able to pursue my future career is due to the MIT Sloan MBA and the experience I had there. I used to think the MBA, particularly at a top school, would be a waste of money. I think my experience and my journey of self-realization, if you want to call it that, has been invaluable. Realizing this, I would have paid more.--Entrepreneurship

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Sloan offers a unique curriculum, world-class professors, great location, and a very strong employment-recruiting program.--Consulting

During my summer internship and in my current job, I had the opportunity to work closely with MBAs from other top schools. I clearly have the impression that I couldn't have had a better education or colleagues of a higher caliber.--Investment Banking

Through our Global Entrepreneurship class and the sponsorship of Endeavor (www.endeavor.org), my teammates and I were assigned to a Brazilian food and beverage startup headquartered in Rio de Janeiro for a month. Our project helped us understand the implications of running a nontech start up in a developing nation. It also allowed us to apply B-school principles in a very nontraditional and challenging environment. Most importantly, I learned that language barriers in consulting studies can be overcome by an earnest committment to the welfare of one's client.--Consulting

I attended business school to explore a new career direction. Specifically, I wanted to complement my previous master's degree with one that would provide more options. MIT Sloan has opened so many more options than I could have ever envisioned.--Consulting

I was a nontraditional MBA. I was a field ecologist with an advanced degree, a high school teacher, and an environmental consultant before I started business school. MIT Sloan did a good job of helping me apply my skills to a new set of paradigms and helping me market myself into a terrific postion in my new chosen career path.--Marketing

[Did consulting project enhance learning?] The Leaders For Manufacturing program coordinates "Tiger Teams," which send five-person teams to local companies to assist them with an existing problem. The two teams that I participated on successfully assisted one company in redesigning their factory and assisted another company in implementing a low-cost MRP system. This experience was outstanding and augmented the experience gained from 30-plus plant tours across the country and the 28-week internship at a partner company.--Operations
