CLASS OF 2004 GRADUATE COMMENTS
The core class structure has taken a big leap forward. Beginning in the fall of 2004, the new core curriculum was structured in such a way that first-year students will be better prepared to take on their internship interviewing and MAP project. In addition, Michigan breeds a team-oriented environment that was pivotal to my learning at business school. Michigan is also good at helping students learn and develop skills for new careers. Through interactive classes and clubs, students gain the opportunity to learn about different industries and the skills necessary to succeed in those industries.--Marketing
Michigan delivers on what it promises. I liked the culture of the school, which was team-oriented and practical. You have access to all kinds of companies, so you can come into school with a relatively open mind about the job search.--Consulting
I was a dual-degree student (a three-year program) with the School of Natural Resources, and Michigan has one of the only established dual-degree programs in the nation. It is by far the most organized and comprehensive. I would recommend Michigan for this type of program over any other in a second.--Operations
Michigan has all the characteristics of a top-10 school (top-notch students, faculty, recruiting, etc.), Plus, it is a collegial atmosphere where students help each other, and it has an active social setting supplemented by Big-10 sporting events.--Investment Banking
Ann Arbor has surprised me. It is a welcoming community and a city full of live entertainment with easy commute routes.--Consulting
It is a great program with strength across all major disciplines, which gives students an appetizing array of course options. The professors were always approachable and willing to help, and most know how to keep courses interesting. The student body is down to earth and always willing to help one another.--Finance
Although it is a huge investment, the opportunities for networking, gaining knowledge, exposure, becoming fluent in English, etc., are priceless. The community is so supportive to internationals, which only incerased my appreciation of the program at UMBS.--Marketing
I participated in the Multidisciplinary Action Program (MAP). I worked with Citicorp designing a Web-based system for its electronic-benefits card. It was an excellent opportunity to put "team-based" learning into action. It also gave me an opporntuity to test some of the skills I had picked up in my first year.--Finance
I worked with a team of four other MBA students for The Carter Center, the Geneva Initiative on Psychiatry (Lithuania), and Aravind Eye Hospital (India). On The Carter Center project we developed strategy for its mental-health group (membership consisted of first ladies, heads of state and royalty from 30-plus countries), facilitated focus groups, interviewed prominent mental-health leaders. Our MBA group learned a great deal about mental-health initiatives and nonprofits. While the client learned a great deal on how business concepts can be applied to the nonprofit world.--Marketing
I worked with an Israeli incubator during the last seven weeks of my first year. It was a good way to pull together everything that I had learned in the core classes and put it into practice. It also gave me good hands-on experience dealing with having multiple constituents to whom my group had to give different deliverables -- something that I believe will be true in the "real world."--Not available
Michigan was a blessing for me because I learned the intricacy of entrepreneurship. I was amazed to find the wide support system that the school provides for budding business people -- from diverse classes to workshops to various activities around Ann Arbor. I was highly impressed with the responsiveness of the dean for making changes and overhauling core courses for fall, 2005. My best moments were definitely in OB611, a class that brings top level CEOs into the classroom each week to talk about leadership -- from Dina Dublon (CFO, Chase), Julian Day (K-mart), Carl Levin (D-Senator) to Bob Eckert (Mattel). They were all in hot seats because all questions were fair game, which was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students.--Entrepreneurship
The great culture of the business school remains with students well after graduation. MBS alumni truly believe in taking care of their own. Calls to senior executives at major firms or corporations are always promptly returned. In the market downturn, it is the dedication of our alumni that made sure firms continued to recruit aggressively on our campus.--Finance
I developed the e-Governance strategy for Iraq. Working out of Secretary [Madeline] Albright's office in Washington D.C., I pitched my idea to more than 20 organizations. The U.S. Institute (USIP) of Peace funded me to develop the technology framework in Iraq. The CIO of the USIP said that my framework is a powerful tool to help turn Iraq around. I also presented my solution to multiple delegations, including the senior leadership from Northern Iraq-Kurdistan.--Nonprofit
There is an extraordinary level of comradeship and collaboration among students nurturing a stimulating environment for mutual learning. This has a great value considering that a lot of the learning experience during the MBA comes from classmates. The school also provides a robust platform for successful career development not only by thoroughly preparing students for the fierce competition for jobs but also by attracting a sound pool of recruiters who want to hire Michigan MBAs. Michigan is one of the few schools presenting a consistent penetration across all major industries: consulting, investment banking, technology, healthcare, and consumer-goods companies.-- Nonprofit
Michigan provided a wonderful environment with a good balance of competitive pressures and colloborative efforts.--Entrepreneurship
