CLASS OF 2004 GRADUATE COMMENTS

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Robert H. Smith School of Business is an amazing program. It's a bargain, particularly if you are in state. The caliber of students and professors is exceptional. The school is incredibly responsive to student needs.--Marketing

Maryland provided me with a broad education and a good network of potential collegues. I would highly recommend Maryland's Smith School of business to friends.--Finance

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] I had always heard that an MBA was only worth the piece of paper and only served to get you in the door with employers. The program at Maryland taught me a tremendous amount about myself as well as about business. I think the experience would be tremendously beneficial to any business professional.--Marketing

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] My experience at Smith as a Dingman scholar has been an unbelievably positive one. The academic work pushed me to my limit and the quality of my classmates with regard to capability and determination far exceeded any group I’ve been associated with in the past. My work at the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship as a GA has enriched my career prospects and my understanding of the VC world. The only negative I’ve had toward the Smith program is in regard to the communications and leadership classes. They are both difficult programs to integrate into a quantifiable system, so I am understanding of the difficulties involved.--Entrepreneurship

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] I would hesitate since getting a good job here has been quite difficult.--Consulting

[Did consulting project enhance learning?] I was able to apply all that I had learned in the first year and put that knowledge toward a practical problem. Furthermore, this was a chance to deal with leaders within the business community and work on current business problems such as new technology.--Consulting

I worked with the World Bank for a semester and it really helped to expand my knowledge of working with an international organization.--Marketing

During the first semester of the second year of the full-time program, students are required to consult for a local business or organization. This team project is critical for allowing students to apply what they have learned in the first year of the program to the real world. Additionally, this "Group Field Project" allows students to enhance their interpersonal skills, including leadership and teamwork.--Consulting

We were given a very difficult project for a Fortune 500 company. Our faculty advisor provided us with some good direction and our final product was cutting-edge. I discussed this project in almost every interview that I had.--Finance

I think the Smith MBA is an outstanding experience for those looking for a fabulous education in a diverse environment. The cooperative spirit of Smith students by far exceeds anything I have come across in other programs. It made my experience invaluable. Smith's biggest drawback is its need for a solid alumni base that can help push forth recruiting efforts for all students. The Office of Career Management does a great job but it could greatly benefit from such a network. Overall, my experience was extremely positive and I made friends that I will cherish for life.--Finance

Overall, the academics at R.H. Smith is exceptional. I would attribute the poor career placement to the lack of companies that recruit on campus, especially from outside of the D.C. metro area. I have applied to more companies through another local school's undergraduate online career Website than I have through Maryland's. However, the school has made significant efforts to enhance placement by hiring an external career -ervices firm to assist students.--Finance

Attending Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland provided an excellent return on my investment as I received a job offer after competing with students from the top schools in the country in the interview process (Harvard, MIT, Wharton, etc.). The location, total cost of education, quality of teaching and students, plus practical learning experiences were hard to beat in comparison with other schools. I fully enhanced my career with this experience.--Finance

The main thing I liked about the program was the collaborative environment. Everyone was really helpful and happy to give advice.--Marketing

I would definitely encourage students who are looking for a general MBA program to go to Maryland. However, if they are certain of their career goals (i.e.; finance, marketing), I would encourage them to go to a school where they would receive more in-depth studies in those areas.--Consulting

[Did consulting project enhance learning?] The project gave me practical experience in applying statistical analysis to real-time financial data. By applying the skills I learned the previous semester, I understood the skills better and could see their benefits firsthand in a real company setting.--Consulting

Smith has a great business-school program. The glue that makes it work so well is that it is a true community -- teamwork is pervasive, from admissions to classes to clubs and beyond.--Entrepreneurship

[Did consulting project enhance learning?] I was the team leader and client contact. I learned how to manage a group of strong personalities and guide them on the path toward accomplishing a goal.--Marketing

We have an option of choosing between a consulting project and becoming a member of the Mayer Fund, a student-managed endowment fund or new markets growth fund. I chose to become a member of the Mayer Fund. This became the highlight of my MBA experience. As an equity analyst, I performed almost all the responsibilities that professional research analysts perform on the job and was responsible for investing actual capital in my chosen securities. This was an amazing learning experience.--Consulting
