CLASS OF 2004 GRADUATE COMMENTS
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Kelley is an excellent school, while at the same time not as expensive as those in big cities. The class size is small, the faculty outstanding, the resources available enormous. It has a friendly environment, and people have a strong sense of belonging. It is, I have no doubt about it, a top-tier school.--Finance
I have already encouraged friends and family members to pursue their MBA and to consider Kelley. In addition to providing me with a good education, Kelley had a great balance from which others would benefit.--Marketing
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] I believe Indiana provides the same level of education but lacks in the name recognition and networking of other programs. Therefore, the answer depends on what the individual wants to do. However, I do believe that while focusing on corporations, there is solid opportunity for entrepreneurs and small-business owners.--Not Available
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The MBA Program is all what you make of it. There are some people who wasted two years and $100K. There are others, like myself, who have taken advantage of the opportunities. The Investment Management Academy taught me a great deal about investing, accounting, and finance. We had many speakers who made $1 million or more per year and were IU alumni. I think IU has the best accounting faculty in America. I would not trade jobs with any MBA student in the country, that is how happy I am about the firm to which I am going. Clearly, the program has been good for me.--Not Available
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] All of my personal and professional goals were met. I built a lifelong network of friends (classmates and professors), and I got a job that pays double what I was making before B-school. I feel that my friends could enjoy the same success at my school.--Marketing
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The only shortfall would be recruiting outside the Midwest. If someone wants to work in the midwest, this is a good place to be.--Consulting
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The learning was outstanding but only a fraction of the B-school experience. I was impressed by the network of individuals and the business relationships that I developed as a result of attending the Kelley School.--Finance
I had an opportunity to work on a team consulting for the Houston Texans of the National Football League. Not only did we have access to most team executives, but many of our ideas on enhancing the fan experience are being put into place by the team.--Marketing
I worked with a team on a research product for a major magazine publisher. It sharpened my leadership, team work, and interspersonal skills. Academically, it put my learnings of consumer behavior into practice. It was also a potentially great networking opportunity. I say "potentially" because I do not have an interest in magazine publishing.--Marketing
The consulting project I worked on was for a new venture class. We had to evaluate a small startup company and make an offer to purchase the company. The offer included a price, limitations on the offer, and other conditions we would require. We then had to present our offer to a board of venture capitalists. This project was at the end of my two years at Kelley. It gave me the opportunity to use all of the skills I had developed during this time and showed me how much I had grown during my time at Kelley.--Marketing
I participated in the Reese Fund, which is a real money portfolio where students pick a stock and then prepare a full stock report with their investment thesis and valuation. The greatest aspect of this course was the required presentation to Indiana alumni who are in the investment business and have an opinion of your stock. This was an extremley intimidating experience to present your ideas in front of 70-plus accomplished investment alumni. While intimidating, it was also extremley rewarding and a great learning experience.--Finance
[Did consulting project enhance learning?] It was an international project for a company expanding in Europe. It was very helpful to experience the challenges faced abroad, which are different from simply conducting business domestically.--Finance
To a large extent, I believe a person's opinion of a program is reflective of the effort that individual put into it. There was virutally nothing I wasn't allowed to do. I took law and psychology classes (overload to the business degree and audits). I wanted to practice running a business, so I ran a 300-employee bagel stand. I wanted to learn more about entrepreneurship, so I got hooked up with a professor who invites about 15 MBA students to his home every Sunday morning to discuss business issues that are not discussed in the classroom (for example, partnership dynamics, litigation shielding, family business issues). Finally, there was never a professor who didn't want to spend time with me -- whether in his office, at a bar, or on a car trip to a litigation he was mediating. The professors and the students are extremely close.--Not Available
When I first began looking at MBA programs, IU Kelley was not particularly high on my list of possibilities. However, after I visited the school, spoke with current students and faculty, and learned about the programs and structure of the experience, it quickly became my top choice. Every aspect of the experience was gratifying and beyond my expectations. Being a public school in the Midwest, The Kelley School often gets overlooked for accolades by ranking publications and by prospective students as a place to gain an MBA. I think this has only made the school, administration, staff, and students try harder to succeed. The result of those efforts may or may not improve visibility and rankings, but I can say with certainty that it has improved student education and overall MBA experience. I would stack Kelley up against any program in the country in preparation, staff excellence, student body, and any other aspect of MBA ranking criteria.--Not Available
I would like to add some comments about the Kelley International Perspective. I was part of a trip to Australia where we basically studied the country from different perspectives: social/cultural, economical, and political to understand the way to do business there. Having done that, we spent 10 days in Sydney doing more research and visiting companies. The final objective was to start a business in Australia and present a business plan. For me, it was one of the greatest experiences, not only because I was able to apply a lot of what I had learned so far in the MBA but also because it enhanced my teamwork skills and my focus on diversity.--Marketing
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The Kelley program was great academically. I felt a little on the young side, however, but I suppose that is because I enrolled when I was 25. The city, however, isn't a lot of fun for 25 year olds. You don't feel like you're part of the older MBA crowd (29- to 30-year olds) and you're definitely not part of the undergraduate crowd.--Finance
[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Kelley School of Business at Indiana University is a great place to attend school. Fellow students were supportive, intelligent, and easygoing. Kelley's new building is spacious, with state-of-the-art technology throughout the many classrooms. The staff and faculty are responsive to student input. Bloomington is a rich community in its own right. I loved that there was a minimal commute to Indiana University's beautiful, sprawling campus. There is a respectable bar scene, when desired, for a myriad of MBA events. In summary, I immensely enjoyed my Kelley experience, and I am confident that others would benefit by attending Kelley, as well.--Marketing
[Did consulting project enhance learning?] The project reinforced what I already knew, which is that plans change, people shift within organizations, and one must be flexible when attempting to accomplish a task.--Marketing
My experience at Indiana was very rewarding. The school has taken great strides to re-invent itself using the input of students and industry without compromising the learning process and student experience. The students have a voice and are treated as customers who will reflect the Kelley brand for the ultimate consumers of talent: Recruiting companies.--Marketing
Indiana University was a strong, well-rounded program that has prepared me for a successful career in marketing and strategy.--Marketing
