CLASS OF 2004 GRADUATE COMMENTS

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The Tepper MBA is outstanding and, perhaps, one of the most underrated programs that stresses the importance of understanding why you're doing what you're doing. The "sleeves-rolled-up" approach emphasizes learning by doing, and an analytical framework to problem solving. Career-switchers like me should definitely factor in this approach when deciding which school to attend.--Marketing

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] I know people at almost every other top MBA program in the country. The tools we learn at Carnegie Mellon seem to be far more applicable to real-world situations than what is taught at other schools. The human behavior and strategic theory is important, but CMU also builds the foundation for complex thought through mathematics, computer modeling, and logic.--Consulting

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] The Tepper business school has three fundamental aspects that I found to be most valuable: 1.) The quality and diversity of the people 2.) The quantitative approach to business that compliments the qualitative methods 3.) The support and excellence of both faculty and staff--Consulting

[Recommend program to friends/colleagues?] Carnegie Mellon Tepper Business School is one of the top MBA programs in the world. Its small size gives students the opportunity to work closely with famous faculty and classmates. Also, a lot of big changes are happening here. We have more opportunities to work on real-world projects. A new dean came, and we got a new name, Tepper (thanks to the $55 million donated by Tepper). All of that promises a bright future for the school.--Marketing

For people with a competency in quantitative analysis and in treating business as a management science, rather than an art, this MBA program is ideal.--Finance

Carnegie Mellon is a great school for a specific type of candidate. It leverages quantitative abilities and delivers decision-making skills. It is not a general management program and prospective students should focus on the school's strengths in finance, operations, and accounting.--Information Technology

I am extremely impressed with the quality of the education and the overall experience that I had at Tepper. I appreciate the quantitative approach Tepper takes toward business education, and I feel that recruiters appreciate that as well. While Tepper was admittedly alot of work, I believe it produces people who are ready to go out into the business world and tackle difficult problems successfully. The quality of the faculty and the education they provided was great, and I feel the skills I had just at the time of my summer internship after the first year was far superior than my business school peers.--Finance

During the two years at Tepper School of Management, I have developed not only in terms of my education but in terms of my personality. I am a much better person now than before I came to business school, particularly in terms of group work, cultural sesitivity, leadership, and work ethic.--Investment Banking

I had the opportunity to consult for one of the largest financial institutions in the world. I was able to directly apply the knowledge I had gained from class to a real-world process. The job was to utilize existing operations and manufacturing techniques to assess and improve an existing financial process. The final product will be a case that can be used for future classes.--Consulting

I did an independent study where I researched Iran and the Iranian-Afghani relationship, for a consulting project that a public policy consulting firm was doing for the Department of Defense. The opportunity to engage in an in-depth research project for an extended period of time, served as a wonderful learning tool for the type of work I will be doing upon graduation, namely analyzing defense-related projects for the GAO.--Not Available

A project course was designed through the newly organized Computational Marketing Track. The track features curriculum on quantitative marketing. Our project was to assist the Ore Ida brand manager at Heinz to identify how to increase market share. We used cutting edge data-mining techniques coupled with strategic decision-making to identify customers, through their transaction information, that could be targeted with promotions on an individual level.--Marketing

In marketing communications, the professor worked with the H.J. Heinz Company to sponsor our class project. In market research, we were encouraged to find real-world clients. My group found a local restuarant. The real-world projects enhanced my learning through understanding the application of textbook theories to real-world concepts and interacting with clients. I find it an important part of my education to validate my thoughts with real situations.--Consulting

Keep your eyes on the Tepper School of Business! The newly formed student government has made major inroads into dramatically increasing student happiness and satisfaction. The new track system of classes is getting amazing feedback from recruiting companies everywhere. And most recently, the $55 million endowment provides Tepper with resources enabling it to compete directly with schools that have traditionally had wallets 10 times its size. It's definitely an exciting time for the school.--Marketing

My time at Carnegie Mellon has been fantastic. I personally feel that this school is underrated by your survey. The new dean has had a tremendous effect on mobilizing the school, and it looks set to go places. As a career-switcher, this school's cirriculum was well suited to my needs. I was fortunate enough to secure my dream job working as a foreign exchange broker at Morgan Stanley in New York.--Investment Banking

I have mixed feelings about my MBA experience at CMU. It's unfortunate that the main thing I remember is the horrendous shape of the facilities in general. They have since cleaned up their act, but our first year was very trying; it was common to witness broken chairs, dirty bathrooms, inproper interview facilities, etc. On the flip side, CMU's unique mini-semester system allowed all of us to experience a wide breadth of courses; most of us graduated with multiple majors. It is also clear that the student body (including myself) needs to work on their soft skills.--Nonprofit

The hardest part of the MBA was managing time across core courses, elective courses, club activities, intramural sports, job hunting, and beginning a family. The best part of the MBA was learning from several different sources, including text books, course packets, fellow students, and professors.--Finance

I am certain that the Tepper graduating class of 2004 experienced the most changes out of all the business schools in the country. We entered at the same time as a brand new dean, Ken Dunn. Dean Dunn instituted changes that will positively impact the school for years, decades, and generations to come. For instance, we started a student government, facilities were vastly improved and renovated, courses were created as a result of student input and, through the dean's efforts, the business school received a record $55 million gift. The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon has moved at light speed during the two years I have been an MBA student. The changes that are in store for the school (such as the new and innovative track curriculum) will only serve to enhance the strength of the program. There is positive momentum and excitement that permeates the hallways.--Not Available

One of the amazing things about Carnegie Mellon is that our exceptional reputation was developed purely through alumni and faculty performance because before 2002 the school had not marketed itself. Now that an aggressive development campaign is in place, the future looks even brighter for our school. Students will find the best of both worlds at Tepper in hard core analytics and world-class organizational behavior/soft-skill development, as well as, the freedom to chart their own studies.--Finance

The curriculum is fast-paced and is currently being reformed in an impressive manner. The faculty is superior in both teaching and research. The experience is exceptional for the people met and education attained.--Entrepreneurship

Tepper offers a great combination of high quality education with valuable networking and social experiences. The program gives you an opportunity to distinguish yourself from other MBAs by developing quantitative, analytical business skills. The atmosphere and size of the program also foster close relationships with fellow students. I don't think I could have had more fun at any other program.--Investment Banking

Carnegie Mellon is often criticized as being a school for stressed quant-jocks who have little creativity or desire to understand business outside of the number-crunching. Upon taking a closer look, I found that wasn't the case. First, there are many outlets where students can express their creativity and unwind from classes and job-searching. The weekly magazine, Robber Barons, is not your usual stuffy B-school news magazine. It is almost entirely devoted to satire and humor similar to "The Onion." The annual Follies show gives students a chance to create sketches and musical acts. One group of students even made a movie trailer that combined spoofs of the "Management Game" project and "The Matrix" -- and it came complete with explosions and special effects! The weekly bar crawl and Friday happy hour also gets us out, as do the many diversions of Pittsburgh. Despite our reputation, the students at Tepper are social, relaxed, and know how to enjoy their business-school experience. Second, the school has a superb array of organizational behavior classes, including "Power and Influence in Organizations," several negotiation classes, and courses on intellectual capital and managing "star performers."--Marketing
