Technology changes made over the past three years:
The main student computer lab got a total make-over, from wiring to furniture. The school added group tables as well as couches, and students have the option of using wireless connections in addition to traditional PCs. Each year, approximately one third of the student computer lab PCs are replaced with "leading edge" systems. The lab also has several high-speed laser printers and scanners. The laptop lab opened two years ago was completely remodeled and expanded. The wireless LAN was upgraded and now provides coverage to all student-accessible public areas such as student lounges, the library, study rooms, May Auditorium, and the Lopata Courtyard. All classroom seats now have power outlets and 100 Mb/sec network connections. The network "backbone" is fiber optic at 1 giga-bit/sec.
Prometheus eLearning courseware (now part of Blackboard, Inc.) was introduced and is available to all students and their professors. This "virtual learning community" provides Web-based access to syllabi, course materials, threaded discussions, chat and other features.
New infrastructure purchases included several new servers, increased disk storage to accommodate multimedia applications, and faster communications switches.
A Polycom video conferencing system is available and is often used by students for interviewing with companies. The school has begun using an online, Web-based interactive meeting service which provides a "virtual study space" for students to collaborate on projects over the Web in realtime.
