2003 GRADUATE COMMENTS

I believe the Queen's program offers a great mix of individual study and team-based assignments. The video-conferencing is great since the technology becomes transparent. You have the illusion that you're sitting in front of a live professor. The discipline of attending classes every two weeks was important to me, since I last had formal schooling in 1978 by correspondence. --Marketing

The material was very well presented and relevant. In courses that applied to my occupation, I was amazed how useful and relevant the material was. It appears that a significant amount of time went into material development. Employers know this and Queen's has a reputation for producing the sharpest graduates. I have a much broader focus now, however, detail was important to Queen's. The focus on new ventures was excellent. Overall, the best and most innovative MBA in Canada. --Finance

The program offered me the flexibility that I needed: close to home, every other weekend, team work environment, very well established and recognized school, and the overseas/global experience. --Marketing

The school offered the most challenging and complete program in my region. The school is internationally recognized and the top school in the country. The opportunities for career advancement and business/personal-relationship building have been exceptional. --Operations

The Queen's EMBA format allowed me to remain employed in an international position while attending classes in my home city. The program went beyond typical programs by a providing solid grounding in the fundamental disciplines that make up a traditional MBA program. Real exams, real papers/projects, that translates into real learning! The delivery of an MBA degree with the input from the experienced professionals in the national class room was very valuable. --Marketing

Queen's EMBA fit in perfectly with my busy life and recognized that the average student didn't have time for all of the "fluff" of business school. Lots of interesting courses and challenging work assignments in an interactive environment. --Compliance and Legal Department

Queen's University knows how to teach executive level education better than any other institute that I know of in Canada. Queen's has spirit. Moreover, they run the EMBA like a real business. Their customer service is exceptional, nothing like other schools that treat executives like young college undergrads. The content of the program is very up-to-date and has strong entrepreneurial and leadership focus. That's what is needed in today's real business world. --Information Technology

The Queen's program presented an excellent faculty with course material that was leading edge and in most cases immediately applicable to everyday business operations. Additionally, the program was exceptionally well organized and the support staff incredibly attentive and effective. The Queen's reputation is well earned. --Finance and Operations

Queen's put the "executive" in Executive MBA. They completely took care of all the details so that I could focus exclusively on work and school and not have to get bogged down with administrative detail. Their staff are excellent all the way through! --Finance

[Faculty strengths/weaknesses?] The instuctor's strengths were definitely their hands on experience. Their weakness, however, was their inability to always tie in theory with practice. At times I was left wondering the purpose of the example that had been given and its relevance to the topic in question. --Operations

[Faculty strengths/weaknesses?] Most of the older professors understood the issues/pressures of studying, working, and having a family. Some of the younger professors could be arrogant and less forgiving. Most professors did make an effort to bring in external views from either the calls or outside lecturers. This what I was looking for in the program. --Marketing

[Faculty strengths/weaknesses?] Strengths are in delivery, conviction, flexibility, content, and relevance. The weakness may be the lack of personal attention due to the distance-learning format (online video conferencing). --Operations

[Faculty strengths/weaknesses?] Most were experts in their fields, superior communicators, and armed with pertinent and timely information. A glaring weakness was the quality of instruction of a few courses. Despite repeated observations from successive courses, this deficiency was not addressed while I was in the program. --Strategy

[Changes to program?] The classroom experience was fantastic. I can't think of any changes except perhaps breakfast service for our 6:30am start time! --Compliance and Legal Department

[Changes to program?] Higher calibre of students. I found too many unqualified, uncommitted, and disinterested (approx. 20%) students enrolled who would be disruptive by not contributing or uncerimoniously withdrawing from the program. --Operations

[Changes to program?] During my two years at Queen's we had a total of five guest speakers, two of whom were young entrepreneurs. The program would benefit from having a wider range of guest speakers/lecturers. The program boasts an extensive list of guest lecturers, but we simply did not get the benefit of their perspective. --Strategy

[Improvements?] Queens has a very focused, customer-service oriented team of individuals. Many customer-oriented businesses could learn a great deal from their business model of service. --Operations

[Improvements?] The buffet breakfast could have been a bit lighter! --President/Entrepreneur

[Corporate support?] I had to work overtime to cover the hours of work I missed due to class schedule. This was very difficult with the work load of assignments and readings. --Project Management

[Corporate support?] Most importantly, my company has to recognize that the process of completing an MBA provides me with new perspectives and ideas that I want to use at work. It's critical that I have the opportunities to utilize these new skills. In other words, new and challenging work is just as important as a pay raise or other recognition. --Strategy

[Corporate support?] I believe many companies, like mine, do not take advantage of the excellent learning that comes through an MBA. I also think that those companies that pay/sponsor education often lose those employees after that education because no opportunities are given. I do not expect to stay with my company long term. --Marketing

[Corporate support?] While I did not receive any monetary compensation, my managers were supportive in allowing me to voluntarily reduce my paid hours of work. --Stategy

Queen's University offered the best education I have ever received. As a professional accountant and university graduate, I have experienced many professors. No school or professional organization I ever received instruction from offered the depth and qualifications of the Queen's faculty. They truly take care of their students, much the way executives get taken care of by their companies. --Operations
