TECHNOLOGY

Technology changes made over the past three years:
The IT department at the Yale School of Management has nearly doubled in size over the last three years. Newly created is the state-of-the-art interactive multimedia lab; the most sophisticated of its kind at Yale University. The lab has 45 computer stations with monitors built into the tables. Cameras, mounted throughout the room, facilitate video conferencing and distance learning. Wireless access points have been added throughout the School and libraries. Wireless coverage is available through 85% of the school and immediate surrounding area. Central Services machine room has been moved to a new facility. Improved air conditioning, uninterruptible power supply, storage rack and new servers were installed. A Storage Area Network (SAN) has been installed and made available online. In the near future, a 20 fold increase for each person will be realized. Each of the classrooms has had extensive renovation which include the following: A presenter's podium with the following built-in items: ·Multi-standard VCR (capable of world standard playback-NTSC, PAL, SECAM) ·Laptop connectivity that includes network and audio/video capability ·High resolution digital still-store document camera ·Touch panel control of room resources ·Additionally each classroom has a high resolution (1280x1024) LCD system capable of vivid quality presentations under any lighting conditions. (Replaced in summer 2001) Dial-in services have increased to 56k. The quantity of modems has increased. The SOM network has increased bandwidth, from 10mb connections to switched 10mb connections. This change will accommodate media rich applications, audio and video streaming. The quantity of network access points as been increased. Research capabilities have increased with the purchase of new software and hardware including the installation of a new PhD workspace with high performance research computing servers and networking. Publicly accessible 'publishing stations' have been made available. Each station includes burnable CD-rom, scanner, OCR and desktop publishing and web editing software. Helpdesk office and services improved to better handle traffic from walk-in requests. Each web presence has been refreshed with new designs. Online databases and forms added to web pages. Online software tutorials made available for Microsoft Windows and Office software. Citrix Terminal Services has been added to allow the delivery of software to students while they connected to the network from any location rather than a specific lab. Student printing system, with 7 BW and 2 color printers, installed. All student study space has been wired for network connectivity. Public computing clusters have been routinely upgraded to maintain fast, high quality computers.
