CLASS OF 2000 GRADUATE COMMENTS

Editor's Note: BusinessWeek collected graduate comments in 2000 during its ranking of full-time MBA programs. The next ranking is scheduled for fall, 2002.

The Rotman School is clearly on an upswing with the new dean, Roger Martin. He has raised funds, recruited exciting new faculty, is overhauling the curriculum, increased the statistics of the entering classes, brought new recruiters on campus, led his team to revolutionize the communications plan for the school, etc. Besides that, he has taught a course and has always, in my experience, been responsive and open to new ideas and suggestions, and friendly with the students. There are good things happening at the Rotman School, and I feel that the value of my degree from Rotman will only go up. On a personal note, the MBA program marks a significant watershed for me. The payoff on a pecuniary dimension was for me unimagined, based on my previous career. More importantly, however, the intellectual challenges of the program and personal relationships I've formed were also extremely valuable. --Consulting

I had a very good experience. The required amount of work was extremely high and surprised me. The school's competence in the finance area is unsurpassed and extremely good. --Finance

The Rotman School Toronto is an up-and-coming school and was a tremendous experience. I summered at Goldman Sachs in London (in M&A), and most of the other summer [interns] had never heard of Rotman -- our name recognition is nowhere near that of its U.S. competitors. Despite this, I feel confident that the quality of education was at least as good as any U.S. school. The small classes, the excellent faculty, the extremely reasonable costs, and the aggressive leadership of Dean Roger Martin has made me quite happy with my choice. --Consulting

The Toronto MBA program is particularly famous for its finance. However, I find it is also very strong in other fields, such as e-commerce, marketing, accounting, etc. I have benefited greatly from the program in terms of the leadership skills enhanced by the school's strong emphasis on a teamwork approach, the easily accessible and dedicated faculty, and last but not least, the large pool of companies recruiting on campus. --Finance

Although I was very disappointed with my MBA, I think that I would have been disappointed with any MBA. Managerial skills are not an academic subject. I find that business schools place too much emphasis on form and not enough on content. While producing work that is aesthetically pleasing is a good thing, this should not be enough to overcome poor writing and lack of content. Talking to friends at other business schools, I've found they have all had similar complaints. --Anonymous

I started in the part-time program and transferred to the full-time program for my second year. I come from a background as a high school teacher, which was difficult for various reasons. I am not currently employed in a full-time permanent job for personal reasons (I do have a summer position, however). The Rotman School focuses largely on finance, which does not interest me, and I took no finance courses in the second year of the program. However, it was generally a positive experience and necessary for the career change I wished to make. --Marketing

I noticed that in Canada, it is very difficult for international students to find jobs, though I was one of the lucky ones. Schools need to make extra efforts to ensure that international students get a better chance. --Information Technology

Going back to school to get my MBA was one of the best decisions of my life. It is not just the education received in the classroom but also the friends that you make and all of the related experiences you have throughout the two years that make it all valuable. I attended a school with a relatively small MBA program (120 students), which I thought was wonderful, and would urge anyone to look for a smaller program that offers opportunities to become involved in the community in a variety of different ways. --Marketing

Overall, I found the Rotman MBA program to be outstanding. And while the courses and professors were for the most part excellent, it was the quality of my fellow students that made this experience so valuable. --Nonprofit

My primary goal in taking an MBA was to obtain employment in the investment-banking field in Canada. The University of Toronto Rotman MBA program offers the strongest faculty and courses in Canada that focus on the intricacies of finance and its application. I am very happy with my experience at Rotman and would recommend it to anyone with similar career goals. --Investment Banking
