CLASS OF 2000 GRADUATE COMMENTS

Editor's Note: BusinessWeek collected graduate comments in 2000 during its ranking of full-time MBA programs. The next ranking is scheduled for fall, 2002.

Georgetown University is committed to the student. Teamwork and hard-core analytics are stressed in every course. The Georgetown MBA is prepared better than most top-10 MBA programs to lead high profiled companies in the future. --Anonymous

During my stay in the Georgetown MBA program we have introduced a new dean, a new curriculum and a new state-of-the-art facility. There is an incredible spirit and commitment at Georgetown to create a world-class MBA program. It is an exciting time to be part of this program, as the momentum and enthusiasm to do great things is truly contagious. Also worth noting is the development and outstanding execution of the first Global Experience, a mandatory second-year study abroad program held this year in India, Argentina, Hong Kong, and London. The quality of the firms for which we engaged in consulting projects as well as the quality of the international residence experience (interaction with leading business professionals and academics) was remarkable. --Consulting

The global experience was one of the most informative and rewarding experiences of the program. The diversity of the program concomitant with the global experience trips to Buenos Aires, London, Hong Kong, or New Delhi, gave us an international perspective on global business that is unparalleled by any other MBA program that I looked at. --Finance

I went from a small nonprofit to a blue-chip marketing job without the direct help of the school's recruiting department. Georgetown opened doors for me, especially when I called upon undergraduate alumni. After competing in case competitions, and working with MBA's from other brand-name schools, I have no doubt that my education was on par with the best schools. The faculty's dedication to teaching, even at the expense of research, paid off for me. --Marketing

The new curriculum that Georgetown established did a great job of training me to be a business leader. As I have interacted with students from other top business schools over the course of the last two years (at case competitions, my internship, MBA games, etc.), I feel confident that I am as well prepared, if not better prepared, to excel after graduation. In addition, although Georgetown still has room for growth in areas like admissions and career management (due in large part to the turnover of staff that occurred as the school sought to further improve the program), I am certain that changes for the better will be made. --Marketing

The education quality is excellent at Georgetown. The outstanding faculty, the international environment, and the benefits of being in Washington, D.C., provided me an excellent experience at Georgetown. The school puts special emphasis on international business, finance and quantitative analysis. In addition, some of the selective courses are only offered at Georgetown (like real options). --Finance

I very much enjoyed my time at Georgetown and feel the environment expanded my understanding of business and the possibilities for my own career. I can't emphasize enough the success Georgetown has had in creating a high quality team environment coupled with an innovative curriculum and integrative experiences. The result is an experience that is both challenging enough to push students, but flexible enough to allow them to learn from each other. --Information Technology

Getting an MBA is like going to a high-end trade school. You are shown a wide range of tools and the situations in which you should apply them. There is not a great deal of emphasis on creativity or deep analytical thought. This is all a very useful but somewhat limited experience in my opinion. --Consulting

The International student body added much value. The finance and marketing departments are really exceptional, but people should not overlook the strategy and operations departments -- they are top-notch. In fact, the only time I would not recommend Georgetown is if someone wants an exceptional accounting department. The new dean is making excellent changes by hiring more and better faculty, implementing student feedback initiatives, moving to better facilities, and raising the school's profile. Washington is becoming a high-tech center, and Georgetown is capitalizing on it by establishing close ties with many local high-tech firms. Georgetown has established a weekly 'CyberCafe', where local high-tech executives present to, then network with, students. --Marketing

While the workload a little heavy here, it is definitely a teamwork-oriented school. Competitive academic behavior is definitely frowned upon in favor of collaboration. People would rather work in teams with people from different backgrounds. Grades are a nonissue here. I also liked the fact that one type of student is not overrepresented -- not too many finance, marketing, IT, consulting or operations people, and that student body is diverse and very international. Finally, Washington, D.C., is a great town to live in -- very multicultural, fairly good public transport, mild winters, and more relaxed than New York City. --Consulting

I have been fortunate enough to obtain my MBA at an institution that is poised for excellence. We know our strengths and weaknesses, and avidly making changes to enhance the former, and turnover the latter. In short, I am glad to have been part of an organization that acknowledges its status quo, and moving rapidly forward for a better recognition. This focus and the momentum surrounding the program has been an energetic experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. --Anonymous

The MBA program at Georgetown is not only academically challenging but also it is a program for building strong relationships with people. The friendships I made during my MBA are everlasting and will help me accomplish my career goals in the future. I could have not built these relationships if it had not been for the MBA program's heavy stress on team-work and accountability. --Finance

An incredible experience. Many of my friends from other MBA programs which are considered top-10 feel we are learning and experiencing the same exact things at Georgetown (if not more)! It is a great program. Entrepreneurship

Overall, I feel that my classmates as a group have been some of the most supportive individuals I have ever met, and I would not trade my MBA experience based on the friends and network that I have made here. However, our school doesn't seem to have any direction as to where it is going. The dean, who came to this school two years [ago], has revamped everything. Career management has experienced a 100% turnover two years in a row. The rest of the admissions staff has also experienced a 99% turnover. If the school has a direction, it certainly isn't sharing it with us. We've gotten patches of the program that are great (selective professors and students in general), but patches of it don't work. --Anonymous

Go Georgetown!! After two tough years, I came out with the exact job that I wanted. --Venture Capital/Private Equity
