CLASS OF 2000 GRADUATE COMMENTS

Editor's Note: BusinessWeek collected graduate comments in 2000 during its ranking of full-time MBA programs. The next ranking is scheduled for fall, 2002.

The true international environment at Rotterdam School of Management (Netherlands) was the greatest asset that I believe no other school can match. I also appreciated the team spirit at my school. --Information Technology

The past 18 months in RSM was tough but worthwhile. --Marketing

RSM is a well-established b-school with prestigious reputation worldwide. The school is excellent in getting in top students from all over the world and training them to work effectively in an international context. However, the school's administration is not service-oriented, and is sluggish to hear/respond to students' needs and wants (e.g. new electives). The public relations department is weak in promoting the school to Fortune 1000 companies, especially non-European companies. The career management service is also weak in helping students to land good jobs. It plays a rather passive role. Students have to rely heavily on their own to find jobs, usually by their own connections. The school seems to have insufficient resources to provide better program curriculums and career services. [The school] should seriously consider firing the program directors/managers and putting in more resources. --Information Technology

I am sure I made the best selection to choose RSM. It's highly international, proactive, and entrepreneurial. Compared to my exchange university in the States, quality and [maturity] of my peers at RSM was much higher. Incredibly fantastic social relationship between the students. --Consulting

The RSM MBA has been the most fantastic experience I've had in my life. One that not only gave me the skills and tools but also the confidence and strength to start my own business. In addition, the MBA gave me the opportunity to meet truly exceptional people, whom, today, I am privileged to call my friends. The result of this experience is the creation, together with classmates, of JoinTelecom.com, a global B2B marketplace for the telecom industry. --Entrepreneurship

I am an American who feels that I have been very privileged to participate in this program. Over the past year Since November of 1999, we have seen the appointment of a new career services director, the creation of the position of an alumni relations director, the appointment of a new financial administrator, and the move to a new building with high-tech facilities. All of these moves are extremely positive changes. As a class, we have only been fortunate enough to be the recipients of these changes for the last four months. RSM has always been a top-quality program. These changes, combined with an appointment of a new dean to the administration, will only improve the quality of the program. The worst and the best of my MBA experience is summarized below. Worst: The administration needs to be more attentive to the needs of the students and their desire for the best MBA that RSM can provide. It is an attitude problem that some of the core administrators have. In general, I believe that the administration is understaffed, leading to additional frustration and lack of attention to some details that are important in developing a philosophy of constant improvement. Best: The peers I have worked with and the experience of the program cannot be matched anywhere in terms of knowledge, professionalism, and willingness to share experiences and help each other. I have worked in teams where each person represents a different continent. This provides an academic atmosphere that cannot be matched in any program. We are a small program (120 students, which will grow to 140 soon). If the program ever grows over 200, it would be a shame because it will loose the intimacy that creates this unique environment. --Information Technology

RSM is as far as I know the best school regarding the student body. The admissions office is outstanding. Quality of teaching lags behind the U.S. schools and is only average. --Consulting

RSM has an excellent exchange program. --Consulting

I can not stress the sense of camaraderie felt among the RSM students. I compare this much favorably to my best friend who went to INSEAD. --Investment Banking

I can truly say that RSM is very special. What I like most and what makes it different from any other schools in the world is the following: extremely international (less than 10% Dutch in my year), small and close knit, much more team-oriented than at an average MBA, very diverse background. Not that many consultants and bankers fortunately, but very interesting backgrounds overall, laid back, down-to-earth atmosphere. People in general care about more things than just making money. Overachievers that let every one know they are overachievers are not tolerated. Despite the somewhat grim surroundings of Rotterdam: a great school! --Entrepreneurship

Very friendly classmates! --Finance

If there was one thing I find particularly impressive at RSM, this is the cooperation among the students, the creativity, the sociability and the good balance of different nationalities. We worked together and not against each other, and this is something you rarely find in an MBA. The great majority was international students, so we all had the same concerns, problems and need for each other's assistance. --Human Resources

When I made the decision to take a 2-year career brake to study, I was uncertain if the choice was right, if it ever would pay off career-wise, as well as money-wise. In hindsight, I believe that decision was one of the best I ever made. I learned a lot while having fun and [making] good friends from all over the world. The job I chose to accept would not have been reachable through my previous career path. I doubled my previous salary and got a job in an attractive city (London) outside my country of origin (Sweden). I had wanted [that] for a long time. --Consulting
