CLASS OF 2000 GRADUATE COMMENTS

Editor's Note: BusinessWeek collected graduate comments in 2000 during its ranking of full-time MBA programs. The next ranking is scheduled for fall, 2002.

Boston College's MBA curriculum is oriented towards teamwork and real life learning. This prepared me for my career after business school. The business plan and consulting project experience are given a lot of importance. Joint degrees allow for specialization in a specific field along with the broader perspective of the MBA. -- Finance Wonderful academic, professional and personal experience. -- Marketing Overall, the MBA experience was an excellent one for me. The process of earning the degree enabled me to build my quantitative skills and enhance my leadership and project management ones. The dollar and time investments were completely worthwhile and as a result of completing the degree I have almost tripled my cash compensation. -- Anonymous It is important to recognize the work and effort that Dean McClellan and his staff have put into the MBA program at Boston College. The program has vastly exceeded my expectations and I leave this institution extremely satisfied with, not only the quality of the experience, but with the knowledge gained there. -- Consulting Boston College's program is a solid program which is on the right path to improve even more over the coming years.-- Finance The Boston College curriculum, through the innovative use of programs such as as the MBA/MS Finance dual degree truly deserves your attention. The quality of the teaching and the learning opportunities here place their finance program above or at least on a par with the quality of learning that occurs at the traditional powerhouses in this town such at MIT and Harvard. While we are on the wrong side of the Charles River, I can assure you that the quality of graduates, particularly in the field of finance, are not wanting in any degree. This is a school that deserves much greater recognition than what it currently receives. On a negative note, the small size of the MBA population (approximately 100 students) makes it nearly impossible to entice firms to recruit on campus. There are far more opportunities available to the undergraduate population than to the graduate students of the Carroll School, and although the vast majority of the graduate population has already received job offers, this is a situation which requires redressing. The majority of these offers did not arrive through the Career Center, but were developed solely via off-campus contacts. -- Finance Boston College is really gaining momentum. I got a lot out of my two years here. -- Consulting I believe that BC has done an admirable job in both gathering together a very bright group of students, from a variety of backgrounds, and giving them the tools to be successful within the workplace. Unlike the top 10-25 schools, BC's students tend to have less business-related experience when entering the program and, as a result, need a stronger emphasis on a more remedial core-course structure (relative to [typical] B-school curriculum). As the school continues to gain recognition, I believe it will also continue to rise closer to a "Top 25" ranking -- due mainly to a boost in the caliber of its applicants. -- Consulting Enjoyed the strong focus on technology, e-commerce, finance and teamwork. -- Consulting BC moved up considerably in rankings this year, to number 39. This is due to the efforts of the Dean [Hassell McClellan] his dedication to improving the academics and the job opportunities of grads. He is the one guy who really was always pulling for the students. It would be great if Business Week could interview him. I think he's particularly interesting because he breaks a lot of molds and stereotypes about successful business school deans. He's African American and constantly pushes, he doesn't sit on his butt (even though he's tenured!) and has such a strategic vision. And he has accomplished his goals despite the politics and old boy mentality of BC. I think he deserves some press!!!! -- Consulting Boston College's MBA program had a very positive impact on my career potential. The classes were just one facet of the experience I will be able to build upon for the rest of my life. My classmates far exceeded my expectations of what I thought I would be able to learn from them. The program at BC fosters personal relationships through a very intense first year. Twenty years from now, I will still know how CAPM relates to investment decisions (something taught in any MBA program) but more importantly, I will still know and value my classmates. BC excels in producing well-rounded MBA's who have the desire to succeed and to provide input to their classmates and fellow alumni/alumnae. -- Finance I am very happy with my BC education! I came here because of their dual degree programs, specifically the dual degree MBA/MSW program. -- Consulting During the course of completing my MBA, I also completed an MS in Geology and Geophysics, so some of the information above may be a little different from other [responses] due to the dual degree program. -- Information Technology I am very happy with what I got from Boston College MBA program. -- Finance Because I was also enrolled in another graduate program at the same time, I chose to attend the MBA program at Boston College because of its small size, flexibility and strong focus on finance. While there are certainly better recognized and more highly ranked MBA programs in the Boston area, the BC program met all my criteria and exceeded many of my expectations. I strongly recommend to anyone considering an MBA to carefully think about what they want from the experience. While school rankings are important, the smaller, easily over-looked programs often have a distinct advantage in program flexibility and personalized attention. Earning an MBA is an expensive and demanding process. Choose your school carefully. Bigger is not always better. -- Finance The BC program was the most positive academic experience I have had since high school, including college and law school. I cried when I graduated this week. -- Investment Banking
