In Aug 01, the WEMBA program admitted its first cohort at WEMBA West, Wharton's San-Francisco based program. WEMBA West has been established to offer the same high-quality EMBA program in a location that is more convenient for participants in western North America. Participants accepted to WEMBA West are admitted using the same selective admission criteria s those in WEMBA East (Philadelphia-based) are taught by the same faculty, and with the same two-year curriculum structure leading to a Wharton MBA. Both WEMBA East and West are residential programs, requiring weekend stays at Wharton's facilities. These weekend and week-long sessions help build strong ties and additional learning opportunities among Wharton participants.

In the past year the Wharton School's major IT initiatives have extended the reach of the Wharton School in four major arenas: Global Presence, Lifelong Affiliation, Leading Reasearch, and Innovative Instruction. Global Presence: Through Wharton's alliance with INSEAD, the two schools have used real-time conferencing and collaboration tools to teach classes jointly with students in Philadelphia and Fontainebleau, France. Wharton's CyberExchange provides students with the opportunity to participate in interactive case discussions in separate classrooms on two continents. Lifelong Affiliation: Wharton's suite of electronic tools for communication and learning have continued to advance with new versions of Wharton's Student-2-Student web site for potential students, current students,and for alumni. Learning: With a $10-Million gift from Alumnus Alfred West Jr. Wharton's Learning Lab is exploring a new paradigm for learning and instruction be leveraging the School's expertise in technology and learning science. Research: Wharton Research Data Service (WRDS) has become the de-facto standard for large-scale academic data research, providing instant Web access to financial and business datasets for most top-tier business schools, including 21 of the top 25 schools in the most recent BusinessWeek ranking. WRDS' access is now licensed to 59 academic institutions including Stanford University Graduate School of Business, MIT's Sloan School, Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
