GRADUATE COMMENTS

Untitled Across Canada

The quality of the faculty, students and facilities are second to none. The Richard Ivey School of business is clearly the leader in executive education in Canada. --Strategy

The program was extremely challenging, yet the administrative staff and profs made it as easy as possible to accommodate other commitments. The facilities were first class and the faculty was excellent. --Partner/Practice Group Leader

The only thing I wish could be changed in the program would be to allow students some additional flexibility in which classes to take. Since the Across Canada EMBA at Ivey was a general MBA, the classes were fixed and no options were available. I would have liked to add additional marketing classes and perhaps fewer technology classes, for example. --Joint CEO & Exec Producer

It was a tremendous learning experience! I feel priveleged and proud to have spent the last two years in the Ivey Across Canada EMBA program. I am sorry Ivey has chosen to cancel the Across Canada program, as many future prospective EMBA students will now not have the opportunity to obtain an Ivey MBA (outside of London Ontario) and learn in the unique environment that I was afforded. --Engineering

This is without doubt the best EMBA in Canada and without the video-conferencing format, would not be available to students several thousand kilometers away, such as myself. --President

This was a great program with an excellence balance of subjects and case-based practical education. In some classes, more theory would have helped in areas where I had little experience before. The interaction and class participation was an important strength of the program. --Research and Development

(Instructors?) Strengths: Ability to get maximum class participation while maintaining focus and direction of the discussion and topic at hand. Also, the ability to keep the topic relevant regardless of your knowledge level of the subject. Weaknesses: Access to professors for one-on-one conversations about topics. --CEO

Mississauga

EMBA instructors were current in their fields and most were involved in research. They were comfortable with mature students and available for consultation and support at any time. Most had a personality that was conducive to engaging students in a classroom setting. All were extremely well organized. --Strategy

The quality of teaching was outstanding. I have done two previous degrees (Engineering and a Masters of Science) and none of the professors were any near as good as the IVEY people. The program was an excellent general management experience. --Operations

(Suggestions?) More outside speakers specifically people from industry. We sometimes watched videos of people like Jack Welch speaking to an MBA class and were envious that we could not have that experience. It was often up to the class to arrange for an outside speaker. --Finance

The time spent at the Ivey EMBA was difficult, challenging, overwhelming, angst inducing, disconcerting and just plain tough . . . I Loved it! --Strategy

The EMBA was an excellent experience! Ivey has the ability to select faculty and students, that enhance the learning experience... it is from the profs that I learned the theory and rudimentary application, but from my peers that I learned "the business of doing it". You simply cannot get that in a regular MBA class. The students don't have the experience. In an MBA class, nobody has had to hire a Yack to carry hydro electric generating equipment up a mountain in Mongolia (some literary license applied), or sold a half billion dollar call on the Mexican Peso. The MBAs study and talk about it. The EMBAs study it and one of them, most likely, has done it. It's a big difference and Ivey does it well. --Manufacturing

The school should spend more time spent on practical analytical skills. The focus on case method was great, but sometimes the analytical method was not stressed due to time constraints. --Design Engineering

The schools should either decide to fail out the non performers in the program, or be more selective in who is accepted. I was not impressed with the level of professionalism of the bottom 10% of the class. In my view it weakened the value of the degree. --General Management

Persons contemplating an EMBA program should be aware of the huge commitment of time and effort for the 2 year period. A very understanding family and employer is required! --Corporate Development and Legal

The quantity of work is very hard on family life. The school did as much as could be expected to prepare students and their families for the reality of full time work and school. I would not have them change anything though. We all became experts at time management. --Operations

(Suggestions?) More opportunities for career search, etc. (Career services) opportunities were far superior for those in the regular MBA program and in fact, the regular MBA graduates made more money and had more job opportunities than those in the EMBA program. There were individuals in the EMBA that were unemployed and self funding the program and there were others like myself who were taking the program to change careers. --Finance

There should be more group work with members from other groups. There is little opportunity to work with, and learn from people in other groups, besides within a classroom environment. --Operations

(Improvements?) More flexibility for electives - currently there was no choice of courses, only assignments. I would have liked some choice for courses.--Strategy
