The death toll is in for South Ossetia, where Russia accused Georgia of genocide, citing the murder of more than 1,500 civilians for a humanitarian invasion of Georgia.
The figure appears to be about four dozen. Quoting a hospital where virtually all the dead appear to have been taken, since the morgue was without electricity, The Wall Street Journal’s Andrew Osborn puts the figure at 45; and Human Rights Watch says it was about 44. There may have been an additional few victims whose bodies did not reach the hospital.
O and G readers from the State Department and elsewhere have written me privately that they regard Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili as reckless, irrational, and megalomaniacal. They and others I trust regard Saakashvili with opprobrium for bringing on Russia’s wrath.
That Russia would defend South Ossetia was certain. But increasing evidence makes the attack look well pre-planned, not spontaneous. And the authentic death toll makes the justification appear to be a pretext for that attack.
I had a Skype call from Tbilisi tonight from Lawrence Sheets, with whom I reported from the Caucasus from 1992 through 2003. He was then with Reuters; now he’s the regional representative for the International Crisis Group.
Sheets says that he’s pored over the events leading up to the fighting, and says that Saakashvili was left with a choice on August 7th — allow a devastating South Ossetian attack on Georgian villages adjacent to the regional capital of Tskhinvali, or stop it. And Saakashvili decided to stop it. Sheets doesn’t regard that as reckless.
The course of events make it appear that the West may countenance both effective Russian annexation of both South Ossetia and Abkhazia, under the guise of a form of independence, and occupation of swaths of Georgia proper. The best scenario seems to be only temporary occupation before a permanent imposition of the former — the annexation part.
We got a picture of what that occupation could look like, at least for now, in the Georgian city of Gori today. Under the watchful eyes of Russian soldiers sitting on tanks, a paramilitary soldier stole two new SUVs belonging to United Nations officials, then dispersed them and journalists by firing into the air. As described by Yaroslav Trofimov, my former Wall Street Journal colleague, three of the U.N. officials escaped by jumping into his car, which then sped away.
I DO NOT WANT OBAMA BECOMING PRESIDENT WITH WHAT IS GING ON IN THIS WORLD. OBAMA IS SOME TALKER..BUT OBAMA WILL NOT ALWAYS HAVE A TELEPROPTER WITH WORDS TO READ FROM. THIS IS NO TIME TO PUT A COMMUNINTY ORGIZINER IN THE OVAL OFFICE. EITHER GET HILLARY OR MCCAIN...BUT NOT OBAMA. AMERICA NEEDS A STRONG LEADER AND NOT PERSON WHO SAYS HE DIDN'T KNOW HIS SPRITIUAL LEADER HAS THOSE HATEFUL FEELINGS. OBAMA'S JUDGMENT IS MORE THAN SUSPECT. SINCERELY, JIMMIE W BECK
Sakashvili deserves this invasion as he is a boy loved by Bush and neocons. He participated in the invasion of Iraq and should get a little taste of what occupation by foreign troops means. Bush and others should shut up and not lecture Russians for that. First they should respond to the world about their own genocide in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Hi, you seem to be reasonable.
I have not heard Russian leader arguing over genocide, other then Prosecutor General Kraftchenko in Nurenberg, but that was back in 1945.
Freedom of speech!
Let me tell you my story. I was born and grew up in Georgia. I'm Ossetian.
The US is getting a wrong message from Georgia and a distorted one and I know that for a fact. I was born in Georgia and lived in Tbilisi and grew up there and all I remember from Georgian people was the verbal abuse, humiliation and finally persecution.
There was a saying back then, when they started cleansing Tbilisi and other regions of Georgia from Ossetians, "Georgia for Georgians" and we, most of us, Ossetians had to leave our houses, jobs and everything we had.......I do not even want to remember, I was a refugee from Georgia. They have killed and destroyed like they did a week ago.
Please broaden your views, I understand that it is not easy to delve into the problem. See, what they have done, Georgians: I was a witness back then in 90's, I'm here now in US and my heart is bleeding to know of what is happening to Ossetians again.
Shame on you GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Again, the history is repeating and Georgians are doing the same thing.
PLEASE PEOPLE look into the facts compare Gori and Tbilisi to North Ossetia, Tschinvali and you will see the difference.

There are more!!!!!!
The Russians are revealing themselves to have remained every bit as barbaric and savage as any "Dark Ages" horde. Nothing about moving into the 21st Century changed them. Nothing about post-Soviet Russia has advanced their thought processes or maturity. Russians are raping eight-year old children in Georgia, and Russia has now threatened Poland with "attack" for merely installing a defensive anti-missile system. Clearly, Russia is showing the world they are brutal, filthy animals, and nothing more.
As to Georgia.
What do you know about this country????
You know that Georgia (Ukrainians call it as Grusia) was made by Russian king, who fought for Georgia against Persia and Turkey in the 19th century, You know that Georgia was pet of The Soviet Union’s leaders, You know that Abkhazia was occupied by Georgian When the most part of Abkhazians were immigrated to Turkey after The Caucasus war in 19th century. You know that Abkhazia was one of the Soviet republic until The Stalin who was born in Georgia added this nice land to Georgia.
As to Ossetia
Georgian prince tried to conquer ossetians from ancient time, they say that ossetians are late dwellers on the land of the South Ossetia but it is lie, because ancient Armenian notice exists ( interpreted by Eremyan (? The Russian for Еремян ) which tell us that Georgians lie, they noted on the land of the South Ossetia people who were called as OVSURY (the Russian for 'овсури' in 6th century ( It is one of the name of Ossetians)
"Sheets says...that Saakashvili was left with a choice on August 7th — allow a devastating South Ossetian attack on Georgian villages adjacent to the regional capital of Tskhinvali, or stop it. And Saakashvili decided to stop it. Sheets doesn’t regard that as reckless."
Huh? It's not reckless? It is more than reckless, it's loony. Saakashvili attacked without provocation.
This village clown thinks, "Yeah, I will shoot up their capital city, because they were thinking about attacking some of my villages."
Under this new morality, it's justifiable to use violence any time you suspect the other guy is thinking about violence toward you? What?
This sociopath also employed violence against his own ethnic Georgians to brutally suppress demonstrations against his dictatorship. Of course he has even less conscience about brutally suppressing a different tribe of people.
Saakashvili is 2 cans short of a six-pack.
And what's with the goofy grin he has throughout this serious affair?
He probably thought he was Super-Saakashvili, the invincible man, with his new American artillery, and SAM missiles.
Looks like the US installed the village idiot as the president of Georgia.
well said Mike. How ironic they are giving Russia morality lessons when they are the most immoral tyrannic government the world has ever seen. The censorship that has been taking place in the Western media is disgusting ... freedom of speech ... what a load of bullshit.
Bush is a liar alled to Sakashvili who is also a liar. Western media are also liars they want WWIII so they can make money out of the news.
LIARS LIARS LIARS!!! Once a liar always be a liar!!!
"Western media are also liars they want WWIII so they can make money out of the news."
Wow, Im a journalist in the western media and I have to say:
There is no easy way knowing all the facts about this rotten conflict.
Looks like both sides must share the blame, but maybe not 50/50.
What I CAN say is:
"Sure" , I want a new world war - and the havoc that would entail, just so I can make a buck reporting it!
Are you kidding me???
Dude: Change your name to Moron.
Dear Daniel, I live in Georgia. I know that Russia hasn't learn yet the Western refine ways of world influence. Not yet. It is somewhat barbaric country.
But living in Georgia, I don't care about Russia. I do care about Georgian Government. The Georgian government that stole Presidential Elections. We all in Georgian know that Misha got 9-10% of votes in Tbilisi back in January (which is about 40% of total population). We all know that Misha knows that and hates Tbilisi people. Our president Bush closed his eyes when 200,000 people came on Rustaveli Avenue and asked for recount of votes. But Mr. Bush announced that Mugabe's is not a democratically-elected president because he didn't allow vote recount in his country. Why Mr. Bush wouldn't apply the same logic to Georgia??? We know why. Geopolitical interests... It is all the current U.S. administration cares. U.S. doesn't care about Georgians or Georgian people or democracy (haaa) - just geopolitical interests. Even better was the story with Parliamentary elections.... Misha's guys are overachievers, perfectionists! 100% of the parliament is his party!!! THEY RAPED the country to win this election. There was no even point of vote recounting. I was there to witness. Don't you know this story about Peter Sumneby who openly attested in some European meeting that OSCE wrote the report on Georgian Parlamentary elections "so to speak" a month before the election. The goal of the report was not reflect the real situation but... you will like that... "re-assure STABILITY in Georgia". Ahh??? Peter, how do you feel about your stability NOW?
So please stop this blubbery about Russia. Russia is not a good guy here. But the U.S. in the past 4 years has done terrible things in Georgia. All these lies to the whole world about Misha - Beacon of Democracy. Dear, Daniel. Sozar Subari is Georgian Public defender that publishes annual reports on human rights violations in Georgia. 2007 report has 2 huge books. I advice you to read it. I attempted - I almost puked after first 10 pages. By the way, Georgian parliament didn't take time to consider the conditions of human rights in Georgia. Nino Burjanadze simply said that it was not a priority. Misha and his guys has done sooo many bad things toward their own people that I do believe that he is capable of sabotaging the current situation to his own advantage. In the past year, Daniel, I don't sleep well. I have just one burning desire, one wish. To see Misha and his guys "burn in hell". In my dreams, I see Misha + 15-20 other guys/girls around him in a jail cells.
I see Mathew Bryza's humiliation.
2 Becker:
"Im a journalist in the western media.."
"There is no easy way knowing all the facts about this rotten conflict."
If you're a journalist you must go there and tell us that you've seen, tell the true.
From a formal point of view Ossetia and Abhasia have far more reasons to ask for independence than Kosovo in the beginning of the conflict.
What is the state? Check here for example: http://geography.about.com/cs/politicalgeog/a/statenation.htm.
Except for international recognition, South Ossetia and Abhasia can be considered states. Most people in both contries voted for independence:
Abhasia, 1999 - 97% for independence;
South Ossetia, 2006 - 99% for independence.
And this is funny:
"Russia has now threatened Poland with "attack" for merely installing a defensive anti-missile system"
Just imagine what would be the reaction of the US if Russia "merely" installs defensive anti-missile systems in Cuba.
One more thing I don't understand.
If you read about conflict in Abkhazia in any source, whether it is biased or not, for example, on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Abkhazia), you can learn the following.
Abkhazia have always been an autonomous republic. The conflict effectively started when Georgian forces entered Abkhazia in 1992. You can read about atrocities and looting on both sides - with references to HRW and etc...
And when you read later... ethnic cleansing and henocide of Georgians acknowledged by OSCE, and so on - no word about the same things done by Georgians to Abkhazians.
Same with Kosovo, Bosnia and Serbia - how many Serbs have been taken to court and how many have been convicted in Gaaga and how many Bosnians and Albanians? Try the same - search in archives how it started and what was going on.
This is not just! If there was crime on both sides, judge either both sides or do not judge any!
