Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina hasn’t said yet whether she’s decided to seek the Republican nomination and run against Barbara Boxer for the California Democrat’s Senate seat next year. But a new poll might give her some more incentive to jump into the race.
A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey released July 24 found that Fiorina is closing the gap in a potential matchup against Boxer – though the former tech exec is still trailing Boxer, a three-term incumbent. The survey found that Boxer would get 45% of the statewide vote while Fiorina is at 41%. Seven percent said they’d vote for some other candidate, and another 7% are undecided. In March, Boxer led Fiorina by nine percentage points, 47% to 38% in the Rasmussen poll. The poll has a sampling error of +/- 4.5 percentage points.
“Any incumbent who polls below 50% early in a campaign is considered potentially vulnerable. However, a Democrat running in a heavily Democratic state like California is often able to overcome weak poll numbers,” the polling firm said in a report accompanying the numbers.
In March, the Field Poll found California voters about evenly split on whether to re-elect Boxer, 43% inclined to re-elect her and 44% not inclined. However, in the same poll, Boxer held a 55% to 25% advantage over Fiorna. The poll had a sampling error of +/- 3.6 percentage points.
Fiorna, who received a $21 million severance package when she was ousted from HP in 2005, said in late March that she is “seriously considering” running for public office next year. If she does make the Senate bid, she will be the second high-profile female former tech executive running for office in California next year. Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is running for the GOP nomination for governor.
I do not want a Democrat representing California in the Senate, I want a Republican
Carly Fiorina is apparently going to challenge Barbara Boxer for her Senate seat in the next election. Fiorina is infamous for telling soon-to-be-outsourced HP employees, "There is no job that is America's God-given right anymore," prompting a reply by Lou Dobbs in his book: "Go to hell, Carly!" Barbara Boxer displayed her professionalism by recently rebuking Brigadier General Michael Walsh for referring to her as Ma'am instead of Senator, even though he has always been trained that Ma'am or Sir is always an appropriate title for a superior. Can you say "cat fight"?

Great,
A TV seeking DIVA that ran HP into the ground is gonna be a Senator. And people wonder while America is going downhill.
Anybody would probably be better than Barbara Boxer, but CARLY FIORINA????
What are the Republicans doing, taking another John Mc Cain dive??
All the opposition has to do is drag up Fiorina's record at HP and the election is over.
She was probably the worst CEO HP ever had.
Run Carly Run!
ANYBODY, from a porn star to a homeless drunk would be better for California and the country than the check kiting liar called Boxer!
I would like to see ANYONE democrat or republican beat her.
Hey Walt,
Carly Fiorina didn't RUN HP into the ground!! It was run into the ground before she took over as CEO. She helped to set the course that eventually brought it back to life (like the merger with Compaq and the direction to challenge IBM in services, etc.). Even the decision to partner with Apple with the HP-branded iPod was "way smarter" then Dell and the other bozo-me-too PC makers who thought they could win at challenging Apple in that space...better to partner.
I'm not voting in California and I don't like the republican party...but what I really don't like are people bashing Carly Fiorina about her performance at HP. Especially when they have the facts wrong.
Another republican forthe state of California. Have you seen what Arnold Schwarzenegger done to Califonia with his friends and republican party.
Republican Party is EXTINCT
This lady ran HP to the ground and was bought out because HP had no time to go through legal case.
Go Home or Go Hunting with Chenney
Let's face it, anyone would be better than Boxer! However what we really need is a Republican in that office. I think there would be a good chance of that happening if the Democrats really screw up our healthcare as they appear hellbent upon doing. The Dems could well wind up being a minority party for many years if they get the healthcare catastrophe through congress. Most of us simply hate the thought of the world's best healthcare getting messed up by Democrat idiots!
Go Carly Fiorina for U.S. Senate!
Fiorina has strong leadership skills and excellent business acumen!
She's a visionary; she restored Hewlett Packard’s prestige as the world’s biggest personal computer seller through a controversial and gutsy decision to purchase Compaq Computers as CEO.
With degrees from Stanford, University of Maryland College Park, and MIT Sloan School of Management, she will represent California well with the only viable economic solution to our times: a positive and refreshing message of lower taxes, business incentives, less government, more U.S. global market competitiveness, and the know how to put technological inventiveness to work again so that the U.S. will be restored and revitalize much like Hewlett Packard through her business insight, vision, and foresight.
Go Carly Fiorina for U.S. Senate!
Look around you, Do you actually think its safe to vote democratic????
My senator is Barbara Boxer. Now that I have your sympathy, rest assured, if Carly Fiorina runs for the senate in my district she will win in spite of if not because of the sad state of the political atmosphere around here...
Hey Bobby, Arnold is a LEFT wing republican. The state is run by a HUGE majority of Dem's. There socialist programs and give away's are what killed California. Government needs to be run like a business not a charity.
Hey, maybe we won't have to address Carly as Senator Fiorina as we have to for "Senator Boxer". What a switch! Go Carly Go! We're behind you all the way!
ABB is my vote.
Anyone But Barbara!
RUN CARLY, RUN
BOXER WILL HAVE HER COME UPPANCE NOW.
RUN CARLY, RUN
I'm for Chuck Devore... he has a solid conservate voting record and is running a true grassroots campaign - not a hollywood PR machine campaign. We need to NOT VOTE DEMOCRAT in 2010. California is the best example of what a mess years of Dems running the show as the majority can do. Our state is 50th in it's credit status... at the bottom of the barrel in education yet we are the 8th largest economy in the world... something is wrong folks. VOTE for Devore.
Yes! It's time to put business interests first in Washington, D.C. California's jobless numbers are beyond 11%. How about electing someone with a little experience in making money--and jobs!
Hey Boddie!
The Republican party exinct? What will you say when the loser liberals (oops, I mean socialist democrat party) take big losses in the '10 election?
More people identify as conservative as they do liberal.
You are engaged in typical hallucinatory thinking from people with soft brains.
Chuck DeVore would make a better semator than either Boxer or Fiorina. He has solid leadership skills developed in the military He also has some great ideas about energy independance which is an area the U.S. Congress has failed to address even though, they have since 1973 to do so. Depending on foreign oil has sucked the blood out of the American Economy. It is one of the reasons we have had home loan defaults due to people having to pay high prices for energy with nothing left to pay on their home mortage. Even when the U.S. Economy bounces back, OPEC will just raise the price of oil and null out any gains in economic performance thus creating inflation and sluggish economic activity. Thirty-six years of doing nothing about dependance on foreign oil is just not satisfactory. The whole U.S. Congress needs to be replaced with representatives for the people, not a bunch of idealogues expressing their own philosophies and perpetuating their stay in public office,
Everyone should check the facts before they make any comments about Fiorina: http://mediamattersaction.org/factcheck/200908200003
If everyone dislikes Boxer so much, why does she win the primaries??
Your vote for Boxer or any other Democrat is a vote for Nazi.
Democrat Party had been hijacked!
Sieg Heil!
I say fire them all and start all over again; none of these electeds in office has any head for money because THEY HAVE TOO MUCH OF IT!! Let's elect folks who understand the basic concept of addition and subtraction that do not have ties to the goddamned Kennedy's, Clinton's, Bush's, or Cheney's!
The real question is whether she is a libertarian Republican like Bloomberg was (business-friendly, but pro-gay rights, pro-choice and envirnomentally aware if not more) or will she toe the Republican line even when it is completely idiotic. Will she ignore good science? What if the real answer is about using taxes intelligently and not just lowering them? Turns out economics isn't always so one-sided. I want a sensible politician - Dem, Repub, doesn't matter - just someone worth voting for. I'm not convinced Carly is it (of course Barbara isn't either).
Its time to put the nightmare of Boxer behind us. California needs diversification in it's representatives. Not all California's are middleaged, liberal, san Fransico, Jewish, female, extremley wealthy citizens....ENOUGH

Stick with facts, not nonsensical vitriol. What will Carlton be like as Senator? Let's look at some facts.
Fact: one of Carlton's first acts as CEO was to lay off 3000 workers. Fact: demographics of those layoffs did not have to be published because there were 500 layoff programs. Fact: in one of those programs, six were over the age of 40 and 5 were women.
Fact: during her tenure, most employees, if they did receive a salary increase, it was less than inflation. Fact: During her tenure, employee morale was the worst ever. Fact: on her rare tours of sites she was surrounded by body guards.
It is true that Carlton is all about the corporate bottom line. In subtraction, she doesn’t care about the people. California is about people.
Does Fiorina realize how hated she is? While she was laying off thousands of workers at HP and sending their jobs overseas she had the unmitigated gall to remark that: "No American worker has a God given right to a job." She lobbied for the passage of the H-1 immigration bills which have been so devastating to American workers. Let's pray she remains unemployed---forever!

Folks, don't always believe what you read, seek and confirm the truth.
Boxer, Feinstein and the CA State Gov't have destroyed a once great state, time to move on and let fresh minds clean up their mess.
I am a Floridian. I know little about California politics. I have observed Barbara Boxer for several years. Maybe her politics suit Californians, but I am amazed that such a snot...can be elected. I would embarrassed to claim her. I can't see how you could do worse than Boxer.
Remember story of how Senator Barbara Boxer got called a racist during the climate change hearing? Harry Alford is the head of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. So the elitist Boxer is disrespectful of our great Military & a racist all in one....time for Babs Shadowboxer to be kicked out of office.

please run carly california need you I will put money on that
Boxer is bad, but Carly Fiorina is just evil. She *did* leave HP in ruins. She used her role as CEO to promote herself, not the company, and she used HP stockholder cash to do it. She should be sitting in a jail cell next to Dennis Kozlowski at Attica, not in the US Senate. The only reason she isn't sitting in that jail cell next to Kozlowski is that there were even bigger executive fish to fry at the time.
The Compaq deal was a turkey. Compaq was close to failure and could've been purchased in 2003 for the lint in your pocket. The merger was simply a way for Carly to publicly promote herself and pack the board with compliant "yes people" who would approve whatever pay and perk package she proposed. There was no other good business reason to buy it; it added nothing significant to HP's portfolio and it, certainly, didn't cut costs.
HP's current good fortune is because of Mark Hurd's focus on execution, not Carly or her idiotic merger.
Carly is all about Carly. Carly is a classic sociopath (antisocial personality disorder). I can't believe there are still fools who believe a single word that comes out of that woman's mouth.
As a Reagan Republican, I just can't believe how far the party has fallen. Candidates like Carly are why the Republican Party has become irrelevent. Candidates like Carly reinforce the image that the Republican Party is only for greedy executives and the lunatic fringe, not for strict constitutional government and fiscal conservatism.
Why not put up Arnold Schwarzenegger against Boxer? Yes, Schwarzenegger is pretty liberal, but he's proven he can win in Boxer's district and he needs a new job in 2010. He also doesn't have Carly's baggage.
We need some good Republicans in our state congress.I think Deven Nunis is one of the very best. He has been on the front line in my area for the water issue. He is a go getter..
