McCain Agrees With Obama on Tires....Finally

Posted by: David Kiley on August 11, 2008

A couple of fact-checks before you watch this video.

Barack Obama never suggested that proper inflation of tires would make the U.S. energy independent, just that it would be smart for consumers feeling pinched by high gas prices and that it would lead to consuming less gasoline.

Based on some studies that look at how under-inflated tires can be in the U.S., many consumers could save around $500 a year at current gas prices if they check their pressure at every fill-up.

Obama only talked about “proper inflation of tires,” not “tire inflation” as McCain does. Everyone, in fact, has to inflate their tires if they hope to get anywhere, though I suppose you can drive a certain distance on your rims.

Not everything Obama says in ads or on the stump holds up to vigorous fact-check either. But this tire inflation thing worked my last nerve.

The Obama quote: "There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. ... Making sure your tires are properly inflated - simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling - if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You'd actually save just as much." - Aug. 1 speech in Springfield, Mo.

The ridicule Obama brought on himself is not about whether or not proper air pressure saves fuel, but it was his assertion by how much (see his quote directly above).

McCain agreeing with AAA's longtime suggestion about proper air inflation is hardly a victory for Obama. Again the ridicule of Obama is for his assertion of "how much" oil would be saved in comparison to how much expanded drilling would provide.

55mph as the speed limit would be a real, substantive, measurable goal which would save oil, money, and lives. Neither McCain or Obama has the political backbone to suggest that.
